The prices for these things are outlandish. I can't imagine what kind of average NEET has a couple hundred to a thousand dollars just lying around. Of course, finding a more locally made one isn't exactly easy, and they're usually just as expensive...

$300 dollars. I'd say that's a more reasonable price. Perhaps if someone could just find a more cost effective way to make these, then they could be more easily attainable.

It's because it's made of FRP, but the high price is chemo. Kigurumi costs money. You must be able to afford zentai and costumes. Wearing a mask without a zentai is not kigurumi. This is not cosplay where it's about the guy underneath. We don't want to see your 3DPG skin. We don't need more people using the masks to make us look bad at American anime conventions and in pornstar videos.

The masks are expensive because they're made the right way, out of FRP. FRP is expensive, but light and damage resistant. Masks made out of other materials are heavy and they look like shit. Kigurumi masks are made and drawn on in a certain way or they don't look right. When you buy the mask, the mask maker is trusting you to look good like the other kigurumi. This is the way kigurumi has to be.

I mean, look at the pictures. Are you going to do it right or are you going to get your mask and look like some kind of Anime Expo faggot? Think about fat assholes taking their mask off all the time who don't even say kigurumi right or know any nihongo at all wearing the shittiest costumes and masks trying to be some kind of Sailor Bubba.

Kigurumi done cheaply or incorrectly is embarrassing and does put a negative spin on it, but at the same time, the incredibly high prices and extreme difficulty in getting a quality mask makes it nothing more than a pipe dream for fans and enthusiasts who do want to see it done, or want to be more involved. This can also put a negative spin on it as well.

I never mentioned cheapening the practice itself in anyway, just making the process simpler. FRP is high in quality, but by no means is it unrivaled. Just off the top of my head, what about thermoformable Lexan as an alternative? The same material is used to make some car bodies. It's extremely light in weight, can be shaped and crafted almost infinitely, and is extremely durable. Not only that, it can be painted and detailed just as well as FRP, since the surface holds fast to paints and such well. RC car enthusiasts use it sometimes.

All i'm saying is there are fans in this country as well that want to give it a shot. It's not an exclusive club. Sure the benchmark for quality is high, but that's all the more reason to challenge that benchmark and see if we can't do just as well in our own way.

Is thermoformable Lexan cheaper than FRP? The zentai costs $200-$300 and there's no way around that. For just the mask, even if you used Lexan instead of FRP, you'd still have to pay for the mask maker's time and materials. I wonder if the cost difference in material would bring the total cost down that much even though the FRP is from what I've heard most of the cost. Maybe you could get a mask down to $600 or $500 for an ugly mask. You could get it down to those prices if you made it yourself if Lexan is cheaper.

Pictures of bad masks I don't even bother to save even if the costume and zentai are done properly. You can be doing it right and still be very wrong. There are plenty of Japanese masks that are pure crap.

Lexan varies in price due to the quality and thickness. Bigger sheets, and sheets of greater thickness are going to cost more. Obviously, the thicker it is, the tougher it'll be, but even thinner sheets can be strong and high in quality. You have to take into consideration how they'll be manipulated.

Honestly, an 11x14" sheet of basic window Lexan can be roughly $17-$20. Considering the tensile strength of thermoformable Lexan, 11x14" would be more than enough to build the face of a mask. Using that as a base of reference, I think it could take a considerable chunk out of overall cost. At that point, you'd mostly be paying for the skill and time required to craft the mold around which the Lexan if thermoformed. If anyone here has ever made a custom figure before, they might know what I mean. You basically be making a bust of a character's head, then heat-shaping the mask around it. Thermoforming is surprisingly good at picking up fine details if done properly.

Theoretically speaking, of course. Many people have tried to build a better mousetrap, so to speak, and come up short. Up until now though everyone has been using sculpting materials like paper mache to try and circumvent the use of FRP, and the results where as expected.

I think it's because everyone assumes you have to "sculpt' the mask, when you should be thinking of a way to "craft" the mask. Does any of that make sense? Just because something is traditionally done one way, doesn't mean there isn't a better way to do it as well...
