I can say with absolute certainty that you need to play Extra if you want to to enjoy Unlimited/Alternative. You don't need to play through all the routes though, just Sumika's and Meiya's. The majority of scenes in their routes are shared anyway so it's more like one route anyway.

I didn't like Alter Fable mainly because it's... pretty much just more in the vein of Extra and Extra wasn't all that entertaining. I mean, the focus is comedy but comedy is not the Muv Luv series strongsuit. Not by a mile.

The whole point of the school slice of life bit is setting a starting point so that when the alternate universe part hits you're all weirded out and estranged-- you have the characters you thought of as comical thrown into a very serious life and death struggle.
It's kind of like an appetizer, wetting your palate for the fucking awesome steak that's currently being prepared.

Altered Fable gives you more of the same light-hearted school stuff, after the very serious plot ended. Would you be happy if they served you some lame appetizer stuff after a juicy steak that made you see heaven? Probably not. It's fine if you're VERY hungry, but far from satisfactory in the whole figure.

I don't think Altered Fable is too bad. It's on par with Extra and Extra was alright.

Like the other anons said, there's no mecha or drama. But I think the biggest turn off for AF was, due to a certain plot point, everyone's character development in Alternative disappeared and you're stuck with the characters at square one again. The other characters, you can say this is understandable, but for Takeru, it was an arbitrary decision; and especially for Takeru, it feels pretty empty to be reading about his stupid former self again after all he went through in Alternative. It makes it feel like Alternative was pointless.

Here's how I would have done AF:

Takeru doesn't lose his memory in the end of Alt. In AF, armed with his experiences in Alt, he decides to do whatever it takes to make sure his friends are happy. Since it's a different world from Extra, the characters problems aren't the same as before (and there's no everyone falls in love with the MC bullshit).

AF then would be about him interacting with all the girls and helping them solve their personal problems. In the end, he ends up with Sumika, and the game ends with him starting to tell her all the experiences he went through (like he said he would in Alt).

aren't mechs one of the selling points of alternative? So ofcourse they are among the best and sexiest, personaly I think they are one of the best desings over all the different media. and just look the ammount of different kits sold over them and you can tell something.
But other than ML there really isn't anything in VNs with so good mech designs. And just to comment no that you brought baldr up, I personaly kinda like the desings in baldr. They may not be as awesome as the designs in ML, but I feel that they have more personality tough. And I feel also that they are more fitting to the whole virtual world theme that baldr games have going in them.
