No, they're more like special moves here, you attack/get hit and build up your cards till you can use one or two of them then just use them in a simple single button press (when you've selected the one you want to use).

Playing what I have so far:

-Story mode will play the same, enemies will have a bar of normal attacks then a bar of a spellcard, with two or more spellcards afterwards.
-Weather system cards were removed it seems and replaced with two "Equip cards" one seems to be the generic bomb from IaMP and the other... Causes some scarlet mist to rise around you, I've yet to figure out what this does really, maybe someone else can help.
-Some characters got their spellcards rearranged (cost reduction/increase), removed, etc.
-Shrine stage now has a completely intact shrine, no destroyed shrine now.
-When you're hit during an attack (atleast it seems that way) red/scarlet gems fall out of you, again I dunno what these do.

It's just the same four from the demo.

Marisa's first spell card is she shoots a star which then leaves a huge bomb when it hits you (or goes past) and spits out about 5 other stars in each direction. Her second is a satellite laser with her riding her broom, then just lots of shooting/stars in every direction.

Alice's first card was kamikaze swarms of Shanghai. Her second, she just spit out the spinning dolls in every direction and I stayed the hell away.

Aya's first card was her tornado dash, but then windblades shot back from where she left the screen. You can just jump at the edge and avoid all of it though. No clue on her second, I 2HKOed her with Reimu's 5-card spirit balls and a [C]... that's how overpowered they are (on Normal). 3rd was she summons one of the big tornados like her old SWR card, but it doesn't leave and just slowly moves toward you. Then she hops at you and does it again, and again. Each tornado lasts about 5 seconds, and sucks up/weakens projectiles.

There's lots of projectile crash in general with the spellcards, but [C] rips through them all.

According to what I can read, it's supposed to take the place of the weather cards; it changes the weather to the current prediction. If there's no prediction currently, it'll do nothing.
If you go to versus, you'll see that the current predictions in the top middle of the screen constantly change when the timer is above 50.0-ish while going upwards. When you use the card, it'll change it to the currently selected weather.

VERY, very unlikely that IaMP will be abandoned. Considering how #iamp feels about SWR right now, I'd say the former will continue to garner a small but strong community.

They fixed some things that I disliked in the first demo, but there's still plenty of things I don't like about SWR's new combat system. However, since Tasogare decided to fix a few of the retarded things (THANK GOD they brought bombs back, but they can only be used as D-bombs? Fuck that), there's still hope. It'll be patched to hell when it's released, I'll guarantee you that.

Oddly, I feel differently and think IaMP's balance is a lot better than most fighting games get. There are a _few_ really bad matchups, but none that are unwinnable, and they don't rule the day. The only characters genuinely disadvantaged to the rest are Patchouli and Meiling.

If you want bad balance, go look at a 3S matchup chart sometime.
