Do you enjoy reading books? If not VNs are not for you.
Start off with easier Vns such as Yume Miru Kusuri or I think Sharin no kuni would be a good introductory VN. After that try some of the longer / more difficult VNs such as ever 17 or Fat/stay night. After that just play games that sound interesting to you by browsing vndb. Symphonic rain, cross channel, Kira Kira are my favorites.

I see the point; if I go into a VN thinking I'm going to get a "gaming" experience, I'm screwed. I pretty much know what to expect though, I've always wanted to read some VNs but never gotten off to actually find some.

But yeah, something on the lighter side would be nice to start with, and I'm not a huge fan of the ero either. But hey, beggars can't be choosers.

If you're okay with quite a bit of sex involvement, Saya no Uta is pretty incredible. It's not just "lol they have sex forever, the end"

Fate/stay night is pretty good. The ero scenes are pretty far inbetween and there's quite a bit to like about it... but it has it's own micro-problems.

IMO start with one of those two, but honestly, they're just my suggestions, so don't rule out any other suggestions in this thread.

Now after I posted this both I think I should say that in my personal opinion you should start with True Remembrance and with Narcissu.
They aren't that good and there are VN's way better but they are pretty short and don't have choices so they are a good introduction.
that being said just follow the images and don't go after anything too long at first.

Well, I just started getting into VN myself.
FSN was the first one i read and I didn't like it as much. Mostly for the main character I suppose.

Yume Miru Kusuri was a bit iver the top most of the times, but I found it quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Then I read My stepsister Hitomi or something along those lines, I had to laugh most of the time though.

CrossChannel was the best one I read sofar, though the ending is a bit weird and it had suprisingly few sex scenes for a VN where the main character is a self-proclaimed sexual harasser.

Sharin no Kuni is what I read most recently. It's got a good story but tends to drag on too much sometimes.

So, that's how far I got, any other recommendations? I don't H-scenes btw.

Anyways, just look around vndb.org.

Some VNs actually are pretty difficult to clear if you don't have a walkthrough.

As a prime example, http://adult.megaden.net/archives/55283422.html . Even trying to follow the walkthrough is far from trivial.
