Another case of furiten is when you refuse to ron an opponent (or can't ron because your hand has no multiplier). If you haven't declared riichi it only lasts for one go-around, but if you already declared riichi it lasts until the end of the round.

Furiten isn't so bad if you combine it with riichi and a high number of winning tiles.

Are you sure about that? To be honest, I have no clue as I never played with chombo. I thought he had to pay 12000 on a tsumo chombo, but only a 8000 if it's a ron chombo. To make it short, I thought you had to pay the same amount that the opponent would have payed if your hand was valid.
