Do you enjoy the setting of Touhou more or the characters that inhabit Gensokyo?

I like everything about touhou but i think they need more pictures of scenery so i can see what gensokyo looks like.

>> No.5285524

Setting.

Mythological critters as girls has great potential, and the current characters are a fraction of that.

Both, but the landscapes are cool.

not canon.

Does ZUN even have any landscape drawings? What happened to ZUN's art gallery?

I is sad.

>> No.5285556

I like the setting a lot because I'm a sucker for kitchen sink settings. I mean, you basically have shitloads of cultural references. Eastern, Western, and many of the nuances within each spectrum. It's kind of beautiful

The characters themselves are awesome, too. I don't think I've found a touhou yet that I didn't like on some level

TLDR: Both

>> No.5285559

I have my own Gensokyo. I enjoy all of it.

After all Gensokyo is the land of illusions. I hope you have fun in your dreams.

>> No.5285577

Both, since they belong to each other.

>>5285556

This. Gensokyo does a surprisingly well done job on being a 'fantasy kitchen sink'.

Also, a touhou thread without trolling? Wow.

I enjoy the games and music over everything else it has spawned.

So i can believe it wasnt made by that retard Zun and that the games dont suck and are a waste of the potential the setting has?

>> No.5285659

And, y'know OP, you got me to thinking about it, so I'd also like to say this. Another reason that I enjoy the characters as much as the setting itself is because the characters reflect the kitchen sinkness of the setting more than anything. Every character, from their name to their outfit, tells a small story about the culture they are inspired from. Some examples include Utsuho, Marisa, Koishi, and more that I probably am not well-read enough to know of

It's just fascinating once you start reading about how much thought one drunken Japanese man put into his setting

I'm sorry about that, but you're trying too hard.

You always should try your hardest, anon.

>> No.5285760

I enjoy both. The world is pretty open. Basically any mythical or mystical being that can exist are dumped in Gensokyo. Even if ZUN should perish one day, the fans can fill up Gensokyo with characters...

>> No.5285812

Everything.

Gensokyo works for the characters involved since it hearkens back to an older forgotten time. Open ended fields with wavering grass, dark foreboding forests, misty mountains etc.....

The characters and their styles (dress, etc) would feel out of place in a more modern setting.
