I actually find it much easier to play on a keayboard than a gamepad. And Arc Drives/EX moves/super jump are much easier to do on a keyboard as well.
The only thing that sucks is that I only use 3 of my main fingers for ABC and the thumb for D and the button for throw requires me to move my finger away from the C button. And this takes a little longer than it would take on a pad (shoulder-buttons are fucking cheating).

Spamming a on wakeup isn't guaranteed to work. I've gotten past plenty of those with V Akiha's dash+AD. Also, you have to watch out if they're still a bit of a distance away, maybe 2-3 characters length, since they can dash and use momentum to land next to you.
Another way is to jump and block on wakeup. Usually you'll be able to block the entire thing, make them waste their meter, and get a counter attack.

Jumping is pretty much the only way, unless you have something with instant startup or hax invincibility frames, like ciel's ex hiero. Against Heat/BH akiha/v.akiha i tend to jump on wakeup because blocking gets you nowhere. Of course, if you use Nero you can forward dash even after the AD is activated and be safe.
