In society, there are many things that make you go "why do I have to pay for this?." Just give it up.

I don't see what's wrong with Sunflower Dev's translation.

The translation that gets the meaning across, but distorts Kenichi's characterization by making him sound more condescending and pretentious than he's supposed to be.

My gripe with Sharin's translation is that most of the characters' personalities come off completely different as opposed to their Japanese counterparts.

Liberal translations for the sake of natural sounding English is fine, but not at the expense of being unable to preserve subtle things like characterization.

(I haven't actually played the game so perhaps this comment is best ignored)

How does that distort the meaning? There's very little (that I can tell) in the way of nuance in the first sentence, that is the
>"世の中には、どうしてこんなものにお金を払わなきゃ? ってのが
たくさんある"
and the
>"In society, there are many things that make you go "why do I have to pay for this?.""
and in the second I would think that あきらめるんだ provides a very similar nuance to "Just give it up." It's an imperative form, is it not?
sage for maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about

>> No.5170854

>>5170639
It's not imperative, but the general meaning can be considered as such, I'd say, given it's being used in an explanatory manner.

>> No.5170904

>>5170854
Sorry I was probably being a bit loose in definition, I only meant that it was a command, not the grammatical imperative, which んだ is when used after a verb, I believe. Regardless, I will assume that it's other things in the translation in addition to this that characterize him inappropriately. However, it doesn't seem to me that it's all that bad. It's potentially preferable to some inchoate mass of words literally translated that some translations are.

Again I must put a disclaimer of "I have never played this in either language".

Except that's not the Sunflower devs' translation. I just checked right now.

Translated:
>There are a lot of things in this world that makes us wonder why we have to pay for them. You have to learn to deal with it.

Edited:
>Life ain't fair, kid. You just gotta learn to deal with shit like that.
