You could replace both "US" and "China" with a number of countries and assign it to a number of time periods, however there are very few conclusions to be drawn that aren't just blatantly obvious statements of reality, such as "No two nations are ever truly friends" or "Some people get to have it good because of where they were born and are thus prone to be internationally myopic" and such.

In the end, nationalism is horribly overrated. However it plays on the mental construct people have of easily assigning categories and associating various truths to these. Once you get two people with conflicting truths based on such myopic constructs, you're not likely to get much of anything but an argument, or worse.
