hi /jp/!
This is my first time here, and I'm probably going to get murdered for asking this question, but I don't know anywhere else to go.

I'm trying to learn japanese.
The thing is, I'm taiwanese/japanese living in america. I speak chinese fluently, but I still really want to learn japanese for that 1/6ths of jap in me, and also because I've always want to. Now that summer has started and I'm no longer bombarded with schoolwork, I decided to give it a try.

So, for those of you who are also learning, how do you do it? Other than actual classes. Are there any programs, podcasts, websites, or online classes?

How did you start? How far along are you?

thanks in advance!

Chinese and Japanese are the same language more or less, just move some of the squiggles around to make the words japanese.

If you want to learn a useful language learn Korean.

Start off learning the kana and going through the kanji to pick out which are different from hanzi so you can memorize those. From there, you could get a textbook like Genki, go through Tae Kim's guide, or perhaps do the AJATT system of sentence flash cards.

I'm going to give you a serious answer here since you have used proper English unlike other fucks who come here and I read their posts and end up thinking, "you should finish learning English first"

1.Learn the furigana, google it, practice it, love it, once you can recognize them at first glance you're good.
2. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/complete go here, read it all, love it
3.now that you've completed steps 1 and 2 start reading shounen manga, and I specify the "shounen" genre", readl ike like Hayate no Gotoku, Bleach, Naruto whatever the fuck you like, actually read Negi, he's a boss
4.while you are practicing all the former 3 WRITE all that shit down, seriously. Sure you don't need to, but I highly recommend that you can write all your kanji and whatnot down simply by thinking on it.

repeat until you're comfortable with the written aspect of the language

6. start watching Japanese live TV, here you go http://bssubs.net/live/
7. now start repeating all these until you feel comfortable with the written and spoken aspects of the language
8. sharpen your reading and writing skills, by this I mean the same thing you do when you learn English.
Learn rules etc etc blah blah
9. Read eroge, seriously. One day after reading a lot of eroge, you too, will be able to translate RuiTomo into English

>> No.5133255

You don't need any textbooks or anything. Just watch some anime (preferably without subs) and you'll pick it up in no time.

You do need to memorize the kana and kanji but they're not that important anyway.

Gaijin learning on the side here. Besides classes, you could try using Anki, a flashcard program. I also thought http://www.guidetojapanese.org/ was useful.
I don't know shit about Chinese, but that would probably make this easier on you. Certainly easier than I had it.
Most of my 'learning' now comes from watching shows and reading light novels with an electronic dictionary next to me.
If you already have hobbies that involve the Japanese language, it makes learning easier.
