Although usually thicker line means the part is made of rougher/thicker material, it's mostly depended on "feel" aka how much you want the viewer to focus at that area. Short answer: every line can be thick or thin. There isn't really a rule imo.

A general rule of thumb is making lines thinner at lighter areas and thicker where shadows would be heavier. You'll probably get a better idea of what to do the more you try.

I dunno how much help I can be with this, but the only thing you should really avoid is to make every line the same width, since it leads to very boring linework.

Usually lines are thicker around the contours and darker parts of the drawing. They're also used to give depth in backgrounds, as thick, defined lines are used for closer objects and become thinner and more blurry as you get closer to the horizon.

First off, let's start with the 5th picture in that series.

Posemaniacs is a base for basic anatomy study and pose inspiration, not something to be directly referenced. It can't shoe musles being squished, pulled, pushed, contracted, tensed, or other nuances like that.

Look how stiff his pictures are when he copies directly from it. He shoes an "action line", but still can't utilize it. He can point it out, but can't really do anything with it.

Look at this picture, it's distinctly influences by anime, but they OOZE personality.

I'm not going to say it's flat out wrong, but I disagree with that approach.

You're not mixing-and-matching to create a character. YOU ALREADY HAVE A CHARACTER IN MIND, AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN FACIAL FEATURES AND WAYS OF EXPRESSING EMOTIONS. There will be general concepts, like "scary guys don't have eyebrows" or whatever. However, getting into the trend of just mixing-and-matching can eventually cause you to reuse things uncreatively, just because "Oh, she's happy, I'm going to give her my universal happy mouth."

This picture was from our own extraordinarily hateful /ic/. It's okay, I don't go there anymore. But look. Look at that shit. OOZES PERSONALITY AND DISTINCTION. Guy on the left ALWAYS has angry eyebrows. And it works, to great effect. Common sense says "Hey, angry brows can only be used when a character is angry." But by using it the way the artist does, you can basically TASTE his personality, even though he isn't saying anything.

It's about POWER IN VARIETY.

Eyes and faces can differ far more than that guide lets on, even when following the "generic manga" style. Try something quirky, and see how you like it. Style is a culmination of all the basics you've learned, and how you think they should be implemented. There's a lot of guides about line weight. Yet, you'll see a ton of variety in how people put line weight to use. If you don't try out different things, only following the footsteps of a single artist, then you're breathing life into a picture with someone else's soul. But still, remember there's that basic that you build on.

How can you bring to life something you don't understand? Simple, you make it clunky, and let it run on batteries. But that's stiff and lifeless. No matter how realistic their dialogue might be, they will look robotic rather than alive. PRACTICE THE BASICS. Anatomy isn't really that bad to learn, as long as you take it easy. I wouldn't recommend learning bit-by-bit in the traditional sense, like learning how to draw legs one day, then the hand the other.

Learn something like the head the first day, then learn the torso WITH the head, then the arm WITH the torso and head, etc. Build upon what you learned, don't build each thing separately and try to construct those pieces together. The body flows as one unit, and if you only consider the pieces individually, without realizing the whole body, then there's no harmony between the parts.

Alternatively, copy your favorite manga artist's bodies, mix-and-match with the heads, and enjoy your new doujinshi.

No, I bust my behind just to help you guys, just like a loving onee-chan would. I don't want you guys to think that guide is what you should be referencing or working towards. It's easy to copy what's in that guide, but you guys can do much better to create something yourselves. You can dedicate time to learning to draw a generic anime character from that guide. Or you can dedicate that time to pour a few cups of concrete to begin a strong foundation that will never leave you, and will open up roads to expands in an infinite amount of directions.

You can draw a generic anime character well, and relatively quickly if that guide is the standards for "okay". But that might be as far as you can go. It's not a rule, some do make it much further than that, despite starting off with just a generic anime style, with very little knowledge of anatomical basics. Those people are different though, because their deep observational skills allow them to see and understand connections that most people don't make until they've been exposed to the knowledge of such connections.

Personally as an artist, I'm never ever happy with my work. I always see some sort of flaw or error with what I make (even if others don't see them). You'll never really "get over it", as it's a learning curb that constantly teaches you to improve. Maybe some others take it differently, but the point isn't to dwell on the mistakes, use them as a guideline for constant improvement. And yes, even if I constantly see glaring errors in my work I still enjoy drawing. The point is the process, focus on trying to get your concept across rather than being frustrated by minor details. You'll eventually get better and better at conveying what you want.

You start developing a style the moment you start drawing, usually mimicking a style you are familiar with (like anime or a variant thereof).

Unlike what many people say, you don't need to be able to draw 3DPD to develop an art style. It helps, especially when the art style is reasonably "realistic" like anime, but if you want to draw in a cartoony style, or super-deformed, you are much better off drawing such characters millions of times in thousands of different poses than practicing to copy a photo of some pig disgusting nude woman.

Use "New Linework" layers, use mainly the top left tool for drawing, then some unholy combination of Shift and Ctrl (also the "Edit Stroke" options) to tweak the lines until they're what you want. Well, that's what I do, but I'm generally too lazy to bother with that and just stick to the regular pen tool at size 1.0.

If you want to be a better artist, do this. Avoid using copy/paste. When you are done with all 25, you will be a better artist than you were when you started. Flip the image horizontally, and redraw/fix up all the error you see: You're now twice the artist you were when you started.

Hmmm,lets see, I think U.S. Paper for page dimensions is a good pick, since that is the setting mainstream comics use, and resolution could be up to the author, as long as it is nothing too ridiculous it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, compared to other circles...
-No censorship.- your submission will not be cut/edited in any form what you make is what the audience gets.
-Freedom of format.- you can contribute the same with a piece of art, or music than with an actual doujin or program.
-Moderate Quality control.- Won't be just as free as to accept the first kid from deviantart who wants in, but also won't be as strict as to just accept Garth Ennis.

Compared to oneself...
-Team support.- It's easier to do something if you have people doing similar things, and actually get it completed, than if you constantly get the impression you're the only one who cares.
-Set deadlines.- If you can't bring yourself to complete anything ever, it might be because you never have the urge to finish it, something you can't get working by yourself.
-Improvement via critique- Your work can be criticized by other members and then you can take what critiques and tips are actually useful to you based on their works.

That's all I can think about, for now, since I can't promise fame or fortune.
