Tenhou only uses two of the yaku under the "Other Multipliers" section (Nagashi Mangan and Ippatsu) but otherwise it's a good way to learn how to compose a hand and what constitutes a yaku. For more specific issues, here is a FAQ.

Q: I called on tiles 4 times and now I have a pair but I don't know how to declare a win!
A: You fucked up! Good work! Can you feel the other players' disdain? Try actually learning how to play before you click on things next time.

I'm starting to write a mahjong game that I'll eventually have going in flash/.exe much like Tenhou, but I'm designing it with a better lobby system and a much much more extensible ability with rules. I.e. the ability to set a ton of options or house rules for a table, as opposed to just nashi/ari/red5/fast pretty much, think dozens of minor options like sextuple limits, aotenju, certain non standard yaku like daisharin/sanrenkou/openriichi, etc.

Tenhou's 32-bit, so at the most that pretty much limits points to 2^31, so basically a 29-han hand would already overflow the game. Playing on a few other games that have forms of aotenju, their method is to cap the limit of basic points at something arbitrary like a billion or something, which caps off hands worth 30 han. Pic related.

While this may be a temporary solution, I don't really agree with this. One option that may cause more problems than it solves is to work with 64-bit, allowing a hand of up to 61 han or so, but that doesn't really help if someone makes multiple of them. At the minimum it allows a much higher limit of basic points, like a quintillion, so you'd be looking at triple yakumans and tons of dora before it's an issue, I guess.


The best system would probably be dedicated integer appending allowing for as many points as I need, I guess. For example, using 4 INT32 and working with them as if it was using a 128-bit number. However, this might be more effort than it's worth for absurdly high hands that would almost never happen.

I'll probably get aotenju working with a cap like most games do, then after testing determine if I need to expand the maximum number of points.

Theoretical question. You get dealt 11 ends so you decide why not, let's go for kokushi. You end up halfway through the round, 9th discard or so, and your hand makeup looks like:

Because what is good about kokushi is that your opponents don't know when you're in tenpai and you put a lot of pressure on the other players. If you reach, you can only hope for tsumo, no one will discard any honor or terminal until the end anymore. That should be obvious, I don't know why you're asking. Riichi is an additional han + udora, but the counterpart is that your opponents know that you're one tile away from winning. You don't need any additional han if your hand is a yakuman.

4p is boring because a huge amount of the hands you'll get are trash hands that even if you manged to convert into a win before the round ends you'd be getting riichi only or something, so as soon as someone else gets a decent hands everyone else just betaoris until draw or tsumo. It's really boring and almost all the wins aren't even mangan anyways. In 3p, it's relatively easy to get into tenpai quickly even for a mangan hand and I've seen plenty of games where all three players went into riichi with balls. It's just more fun when everyone isn't being defense pricks going for shitty hands.
