So, is this show's poor quality entirely Maeda's fault, or is there more wrong with it than the shitty writing?
I really enjoyed all of Key's stuff and was anticipating this more than any show for a while as soon as I heard Jun's name attached, but after six episodes I'm left scratching my head at what went wrong.
None of the characters are interesting or engaging, save for Tenshi in the latest episode maybe, the setting is decent in paper but has been executed poorly, the OST's alright for the most part, but the Haruhi-esque concert scenes are as ridiculously out of place as the sudden morose 'back-story flashbacks'. I really wanted to like this show and have let a lot of stuff slide, but now the terrible quality really hitting home.

Maybe Maeda should just stick to VNs; anime is perhaps too different a medium for him to write for?

I think it's decent, certainly not bad, but not up to par with what I'd expect from Maeda. But Maeda has said that he's all out of stories; that's why he said he was going to stop writing a few years ago.

perhaps I'm not in the position to speak of this matter since I don't come to /jp/ as frequently as some the regulars,
but from what I can observe /jp/ sports a more tolerable userbase due in part to the type of people the discussions here attract.

Anime and Manga tends to attract a huge crowd of people, and thanks to streaming and online manga readers that swarm has many unsavory folk in its ranks.
The stuff here is a little less widely appreciated by the masses, as a result we attract less of the unsavory people /a/ attracts. though I've noticed since the past couple of months there has been spillovers from /a/ and /v/

I genuinely thought Angel Beats was a good show after first 3 episodes. And I thought that the premise was something that would make sense of and add meaning to all the deaths in Key's previous works.
After 5, the glaring similarities to Haruhi and bland protagonist started to wear me out, and it became obvious that this show was not going to be what I wanted it to.
After 6, I don't know what to think. Other than Tenshi, the episode was... bad. And really stupid. And yeah, I too thought Maeda's writing is the real weak part of the show - but we don't know how much freedom he had in writing.
BUT! Episode 6 resolved the new student council president plot very quickly, so there's hope for a major twist that I've been expecting to come soon. If it actually happens, and if its good enough, then there's a hope for the show.

Oh, and Tenshi's cuteness is a miracle of the universe.
