Practice, give it time. It's as much learning the gameplay as the patterns and that's not going to come quickly to most people.

If you're really feeling discouraged on normal, try hard for training in avoiding things or easy mode for learning some of the patterns.

If you use continues, you'll get too far into the game before you're good enough to take it on. If you're going to use continues at all, you should wait until you're good enough to want to practice specific levels and spellcards, and not go farther than the stage you intend to figure out.

Credit feeding your way through the game can actually be harder, too, since once you figure out the first couple of levels you can make it to the later ones with a surplus of lives.

But mostly it's a bad idea because overusing continues forces you to replay levels that you suck at over and over again. It's fun the same way banging your head against a wall is fun. Playing to a single credit helps you to enjoy the entire game as a single entity, it allows you to improve and experiment at your own pace and develop skills that will help you succeed at other Touhou games and STGs in general.

Everyone bashes easy mode, but if it's your first time playing, and you can't get past stage 3 on normal, then go easy mode. After you finish it once though it's redundant to play it again, or any other on easy mode for that matter. Aim for 1CC normal, practice mode is your friend.

You'll know you're getting better when you stop using focus as much and don't have your eyes always glued to your hit box, get use to streaming and trusting your intuition... after it's developed lol.

I've been working on this too, everyone says it's easy but I get owned after about 200 attempts. I can easily get through to Suwako without bombing/dying, but I lose ~1 life on the giant lillypad card, ~1 on the green line trap card, then I get owned on the rainbow drops/rain cards. Just keep plugging away I guess -.- good luck.

simply sat down at their computer one day and played through the game on lunatic. Think about it for a minute. This game is fucking stupid difficult. You have to master it at each level in order to get good.

The best advice I can give is to PLAY EVERY DAY. Practice is important. If I don't play for a couple weeks I come back and suck. It never fails.
