Never played Touhou before but I want to.
Should I play the games in order?
Anything special I need to download too after getting the game? ie; programs to run it.
Also, is there somewhere where I can translated ones?

Also again, anime.

>> No.5069787

>>5069771
Because PCB's difficulty is really good for starters and it has borders which will help the newbie survive a little longer.

>> No.5069791

I played EoSD first. It's the first in the (real) series and has simpler danmaku (not gimmicky) which is great for beginner practice. Don't play on easy mode.

>> No.5069798

Whats all this love for PCB about.
I'd recommened EoSD if you're new or MoF if you want something a little easier.
Shouldn't need anything to download extra except the english patches
if you want them.

>> No.5069800

One vote for EoSD here.
I think it has the least 'weird shit' in it.

>> No.5069803

I started off with EoSD and went through numerically, and I dunno why people are suggesting PCB and IN. with EoSD, I feel that it forces you to naturally learn where your hitbox is, which helped a lot in the long run.

Not saying you're wrong and I'm right, just wondering why.

>> No.5069807

Do not start with IN. It has some gameplay mechanics which give you bad habits. PCB is probably the best one start on in my opinion.

>> No.5069810

Dont even really need the english patches.

These. Simpler patterns let you take it easy while learning not to rely on focus to show your hitbox (since that feature wasn't added till the next game).

Yes I know it doesn't have a visible hitbox, it's still too easy.

I started with EoSD, even though I still don't know where Reimu's Hitbox is exactly (Marisa's is more easier to spot I guess)/

>>5069803
Doesn't do much when Touhou isn't his first shooter, but if it is I guess that would apply.
You can't afford to be staring at your hitbox anyway, though.

>> No.5069834

You're right. MoF is a lot easier than EoSD except for Kanako's final spell card.

>> No.5069837

What's a hitbox? And what are borders?

>> No.5069839

>>5069817
If you start with PCB you will develop a habit of relying being able to see your hitbox. This is a bad habit. I suggest EoDS first. It's simply better to begin with interms of gameplay, danmaku and overall presentation. Plus you are introduced to the characters.

>> No.5069851

Play the game and you'll find out.

Look it up on the wiki.
Hitboxes are where collisions are detected. They are often not as large as player and bullet sprites. If your hitbox and the bullet hitbox collide, bang, you're dead.

>> No.5069858

>>5069837
If the hitboxes of a bullet and the player meet, the player dies. It's the area you can be hit and take damage.

Cherry borders is a gameplay element in PCB which grants temporary invincibility if you collect 50000 cherry points.

What the guy said about streaming. Her first end of level spell card is fairly easy if you just circle the screen but you won't kill her very quickly that way. Generally there's a large enough gap between the streams she leaves behind that you can follow her across the screen with enough practice and end the card quickly. Just make sure to stay on the move and don't let the streams congregate in the same spot.

With the one where there's two of her, always stop firing when she disappears, move to the other side of the screen, then resume firing. Green bullet spam is the only thing here that should kill you.

On her final card (on normal, anyway), again, you can survive easily by simply circling the screen, albeit much more slowly here than you would go on her first card. Just use the charging sound as an indicator for when you need to get ready to move again.

Take it easy. Depending on how you are about video games, it might be easy to drop dead the first few times and give up. Don't. You develop skill quickly, and the games are very fun when you're ready for the challenge.
There's a lot to explore in Touhou, so enjoy.
My personal favorites are Subterranean Animism and Mountain of Faith, both of which have a great atmosphere in addition to challenge.

>> No.5070599

>>5070535
This largely depends on the game and situation. In EoSD every character starts with the same number of bombs (2, I believe) and upon death it is restored back to that number. Using a bomb will deplete one counter under "spell". In other games, certain characters will receive bonus bombs if they die while still having some left. In Imperishable Night, if you death bomb after the normal timer's up but you're still in that retarded IN-only long death bomb window, it will use two instead of the normal one as a penalty.

tl;dr, in EoSD, no, you only use one "spell" per bomb.

This is something I've always been undecided on. For survival runs, do I go Reimu or Marisa? Reimu has the smaller hitbox but weaker shot types (in general). Better for surviving, but you'll likely be forced to survive for longer. Basically, new guy, just go through the different shot types. Play one till you get a game over then instead of continuing, switch to a new one. Here's some pros and cons of each character/shot type.

Reimu A - Small hit box and homing amulets allow you to focus purely on dodging rather than tracking the boss to deal damage. Bomb is mediocre, nothing special.

Reimu B - A more focused shot than Reimu A so it can dispatch enemies quicker but it doesn't track enemies and it's still weaker than Marisa. Weak bomb, too, but you still have a small hitbox. Despite the inherent drawbacks, this was still the first character and shot type that I used to 1cc EoSD.

Marisa A - Something of a mix between Reimu A and Reimu B that put on weight. Larger hitbox, moves faster than Reimu, and has highly focused shots that deal higher amounts of damage. More than Reimu B by far. Mediocre full screen encompassing bomb like Reimu A, although I'd rate Reimu A's higher.

Marisa B - Still fast, fat, and focused, but now with piercing. Moderately powerful and has a really nice bomb. Lasts long, encompasses the entire screen (if you're near the bottom, and does considerable damage. I think this was the second one I 1cc'd with.

Conclusion - pick whichever one you like best. They all have their merits, even Reimu B (although the her biggest "bonus" is that she has higher damage than Reimu A while still having a smaller hitbox).

I think they still have different hitbox sizes, it's just that in EoSD Reimu doesn't have the larger death bomb window like she does in later games. Of course, the death bomb timer in EoSD is just plain brutal to begin with.

Actually she has the highest damage of all options, you just have to get right up to the boss and shotgun into their face. A lot of patterns have a bit of a windup time that gives you enough of a window to take off a quarter to a half of their life bar before you have to move away.

You should remember too that for each shot types has different Patchouli battles. I've told that Marisa B or Reimu A have the easiest Patchouli battle, but personally I don't know about that.

Okay, move all files without a game number appended to them into the main folder of the game you wish to patch. It should be the same place where the exe is. Then also move the file with the game you're patching's number into that folder. Then use the VPatch.exe to start up the game in vsync mode. The vpatch uses the exe with the original Jappanese name though. For all the games besides EoSD this is just th07.exe, th08.exe or something similar. For EoSD it's 東方紅魔郷.exe

Simply rename th06e.exe into that to use the vsync patch for EoSD.
