Well fudge. I've listened to that little snippet of the Japan Expo theme about 30 times already. Seishun really has that overbearing synth thing again which I hate to say gets rather irritating... Just seems way too much like the past 2 and another 50k seller, I just can't imagine why he doesn't use something different because sales will absolutely not improve with this kind of judgment, even if the songs are good people get tired of the same sound. I disagree, but in comparison to the coupling song I could see where you could get that impression. The coupling song is really one of the most stripped down songs in quite some time.

I think you need to first detach sales to song style or your perception of what works with songs. Although a great song should always sell very well, this is a strange wota world right now.

Its a lot more variable honestly, the best most recent selling songs such as Nanchatte are represented well in the new single's style. What makes a song a good seller is balanced upon a whole list of factors, many of which are quite trivial even (of course this style fatigue is part of this).
I think the message of Seishun Collection is very strong and inviting to a lot of people (girls and boys, which is important). The translation was posted several parts ago if want to read the lyrics but is probably available at various sites.

Look at the new album, did anyone expect those types of songs to be collected together, I didn't expect that sort of sound landscape but it surprisingly worked together. What I think has happened is Tsunku has unfortunately become machine like when considering new singles. I just didn't expect radical change to happen immediately after the new album. Tsunku is doing what he has been doing for the last 2-3 years with the musical theme of the singles. He isn't going to take drastic chances with Musume singles especially right now, he'll do so with the B-sides and album cuts.

I can understand the "singles fan" feeling upset but they may be a little shortsighted in their analysis. Getting frustrated with line distribution and musical direction of the singles is kind of old hat with Tsunku. Its going to happen especially nowadays.
That being said, would I like to see something like Genki Pika Pika being a single, yes! Do I like the message and elaborate parts from Nanchatte, sure. That is really what the new single is like, a combination of the two really.

tl;dr; New single isn't some new radical change but a combination of recent successful things combined to progress out of the new album. B-side is a refreshing stripped down song about friendship for the Expo.

Managing a group over 13 years is a little more challenging to do in the industry instead of just burning out quickly with a hot album or fad song.

I'm a huge fan, since '98, and i know every single Musume song by heart... I was talking about the population at large not ever hearing anything more than the singles, and they probably pass on buying the album because they figure it's about as diverse as the singles of recent years. Yea well it could just be another part of the reason the album sales haven't done that well. But album sales as you should know aren't exactly the same in Japan as they are Stateside. I'm not sure if people are willing to buy all the new singles and then get a new album packed with the same singles. Perhaps it is just the "single" aspect those casual fans are looking for. Again, all these things are mired with lots of variables throughout the years and the economic environment and just changes in the idol industry in general.

We both know the company does very well, I believe they were ranked 4th top company or something last year. I have a theory that Tsunku is saving up for a new industry movement. But playing conservative and shrewd business man is pretty much the norm across the board in most industries.

Yea that was definitely interesting. I know its strange to see something like that in front of a wall of crew and studio workers but as far as the girls awareness it was like they weren't there.

They never said that it would be a LP iirc, I just assumed that.
But yeah, you're right, I can think of two reason why Avex wouldn't go through with a proper full-length.

1. They don't have that much faith in her to cough up the cash to produce, record and promote one. So they decide to as you said test the waters with an EP. Understandable.
2. She opted not to get in and write and record a album due to her mom's death. She was working on music well before her mom died, and we don't know how much she's done after, so these 5 tracks might just as well be scrapped tracks from what should've been her album. Tracks that Avex didn't want to throw away or save for the future so "Ehh, fuck it, release a mini-album. See how that goes."
