The hate isn't for JET--just the morons they're willing to hire. It's more of a "who got their applications in first and is not a felon" thing than a "who is qualified for this position" thing. JET is not difficult to get into. Just do what's asked of you and quickly.
I just graduated with a BA in East Asian Languages & Cultures. Don't do it. Major in something that is useful, but take Japanese courses throughout. For summer jobs, get teaching experience. Whatever degree you graduate with, if you have some Japanese skill and some teaching experience on your resume, you'll be at the front of the line to get into JET and the like.

But I reiterate: If you're no more than an otaku wanting to experience your Pure Land, don't apply. Travel to Japan instead.
