I don't have a problem with what MangaGamer did for KiraKira Curtain Call (see http://mangagamer.wordpress.com/2010/02/07/sempaiseniors/ ), where sempai is used for a senior the guy respects, and senior is used for a bunch of jerks he does not respect. >ef Honorific Usage
>(or Why We Kick Ass at Translating)

>For the vast majority of the cast we went with our standard stance, which is to drop honorifics unless being directly addressed. This helps cut down clunky-sounding English without losing some implied meaning in situations that really call for it. Besides that, the cast in the first two chapters are all a rather informal bunch, so the removal outside of direct address tended to mean very little.

>We decided to make exceptions for certain characters. Chihiro was the big one. Her memory is more or less locked into the mindset of a little girl due to her accident at a young age. This is made apparent during one of her first meetings with Renji:

>Chihiro: "Let's see... Is "Renji-san" okay with you?"
>Renji: "'-san' is too formal. Why not '-kun'?"
>Chihiro: "That's too much for me."
>Renji: "I'm younger than you."
>Chihiro: "That's true, but why do names suddenly matter?"
>Renji: "Well, in any case, we're friends."
>Chihiro: "Hm... I understand. Let's see, then. From now on I'll call you Renji-kun."

>Essentially, she's stuck in the mindset of a polite little girl who isn't comfortable with dropping honorifics. She has to be convinced to change Renji's honorific to a less formal one. That's why we decided she would be the only character to keep them at all times.

>> No.5022515

>>5022511
>Mizuki has one big exception but otherwise follows the standard ruleset. We decided she would keep the -sempai honorific at all times because role models are important to her. When she meets Chihiro, she makes this quite clear:

>Mizuki: "Chihiro-sa... Ah, if it's okay with you, could I call you Chihiro-sempai?"
>Chihiro: "Huh?"
>Mizuki: "Well~, you're older than me just like Kei-sempai, so it feels weird to call you differently, ahahaha."
>Chihiro: "Is that so? Well then, let's be sempai and kouhai."
>Mizuki: "Yay~"

>Mizuki has a bit of an obsession with being able to call people with the -sempai honorific as you can see.

>The one other thing of note is using Mr. and Ms./Mrs. before adult character names. This should really be self-explanatory, but in English, would you ever call friends your own age "Miss" or "Mister"? Keeping those as honorifics (or just dropping them) sounds a lot more natural. On the other hand, changing them to Ms. and Mr. for adults is perfectly normal and flows quite well.

>Now then! We've come to accept that not everyone will agree with this methodology, so we're offering you all an option. If there's enough negative feedback, we will make an alternate version for ef Genuine Draft that will remove ALL honorifics regardless of context, except in extreme exceptions where honorifics are unavoidable. Just know this may cause a slight delay (probably a week) in getting ef Genuine Draft out... but we ARE willing!

Yeah, those things are annoying, but are they ever placed in such a way that they seriously detract from the scene (besides the "oh, a meme, excuse me while I rage" factor, of course) or change the tone of a scene to something it was not meant to be? They're not even terribly common, and they all occur in scenes that were meant to be fairly lighthearted or comedic anyway.

And remember, having a high standard does not necessarily mean they'll do everything exactly as you would. They've made some decisions others might disagree with, but it was all in order to make a product that they were happy with in the end.

I prefer honorifics if the game takes place in Japan, otherwise I don't want to see them.

As to localization of jokes. If the line is unvoiced, localize it as much as you want. If the line is voiced in Japanese, then be careful about how you localize it, because the text should resemble what is being voiced.

A better example would be Stg. Frog. The dub was great, however it was highly localized at times. The provided subtitles to watch it subbed were more literal and localized. Both worked well, but you would not want to read the dubbed script while watching it subbed.

I did a byte/line count earlier today on Mashiroiro Symphany. You have to delete the "mem" files first (these are short for "memories" as in 1:1 copypastas from the normal game script), launch up Notepad++ and run a massreplace on ".message" (that's the command the gamescript displays the lines appearing ingame).
If you did this, you get the resulted image, which is different by one line to NNL's "Swells".

If you check out getchu you notice that the hair of the heroines are entirely different colored, and similarly to ef this is also a game normally requiring you to run on japanese windows.

Now compare it with airi_route02.sc (where the scene normally happens).
http://www.privatepaste.com/dc1d2a9401
See line 1469 and notice that from there on, the entire mem file is identical to there. You can just copypaste the entire shit to the mem files after you translated the main scripts, and thus it wouldn't make sense to count the mem files too.

If you had the old font installed, uninstall it. The game supposedly reads the font file directly from the game folder.

>> No.5040896,1 [INTERNAL]

Wow, NNL sure fucked up this translation, doesn't work for me either, and i'm not only one it seems. Crashes as soon as i start it, i have a bunch of other VN's installed and never had problem with any of those, running on xp sp3, locale japanese, tried install 3 times, rebooted comp, east asian files installed, not much else i can do?

Some of the early scenes don't have text, it's normal.

Typo... I know for a fact NNL read these threads, so letting you know, in case you want to fix it in Genuine Draft, or something.

Is it normal that Hiro is unvoiced? I thought he was voiced back when I played the ch1 preview...

That never happened bro.

He does get a voice in chapter 2, but while you are playing with him as protag, he doesn't have one.

Is there no CG/scene mode? Didn't show up after finishing Ch1 either.

I'm having the same problem as you, anyone have any advice?

I also can't start the game in WinXP, but it works on Windows 2008! PCs differ only with video card: XP has nvidia, 2008 has ATI.
