I have wanted to comment on this for a while, but ever since I saw the original plans for Fate I've got the idea that the story must probably had been planned to focus mainly on King Arthur, with his past before he became the king of England having something to do with blacksmithing.

Whenever they decided for him not being the protagonist and do the genderbending, Nasu must have picked that past to make Shirou's character.

Before that, he was just a more beatdown Shirou. He never dobuted himself even up to his death. The one display of sentience post-death is as Archer, and the one route where he does get around to doing the stuff he wants consists of "let's throw a massive tantrum, put everyone in risk I have only set vague and ineffective continences against and kill my younger self for a plan I pretty much know is going to fail because there's jack shit I can actually do". Despite the fanboy masturbation, Archer is basically a really misserable, douchebag version of Shirou who nearly gets a lot of people killed for the sake of playing a game of chicken with himself.
