I don't like the tengu.

Now before you get all on my ass about nostalgia or whatever, I do like Touhou, I do like kappa, I do like most of the new additions. I don't like the crow tengu-white wolf tengu split that's been forced where it doesn't belong (Double Spoiler), but that's something for another time.

See, my problem with the tengu is that they're completely out of place. I get that Touhou is ultimately derived from Eastern folklore and mythology, and that ZUN created the modern views of youkai, and so they all, well, get together well. Humans too.

But ever since then, ZUN keeps trying to make new races for stuff since the first six Touhou games (five, since many discount Tasofro's Immaterial and Missing Power) came out. Tell me a Touhou game that uses witches and shrine maidens without the other. Only Aya really seems to be consistent.

Tengu are Touhou-enough, I guess, but they can't ever be mistaken for a race of Gensokyo, unlike oni and kappa. And while Touhou is by no means faithful to the original myths, tengu just take it to another level.

That's bollocks, but go on.

ZUN loves his Aya, you have problem?

Touhou 3 had aliens and 6 had western vampires. There has never been any consistency in the setting or characters other than "they're all female".

I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at here OP. Are you saying you think the Tengu are under-elaborated or inconsistently elaborated compared to other races in Gensoukyou?

Copypasta from /tg/ regarding how dragonborn was shoved into 4E by Wizards of the Coast.

This looks like fallout from the upcoming raid on /c/ due to the spy situation. Be wary of large amounts of HNNNG-worthy pictures due to splash damage.

I don't see how your argument follows your thesis. Tengu are very traditional Eastern mythology and, in fact, not including them would be like excluding Suika for something less specific like a run-of-the-mill "ogre." In fact, borrowing from Suika, the only reason you know she's an oni is because you're told. The only reason you know Yuugi is an oni is because she carries the same motifs as Suika. Suika could very well have been a sort of deer-youkai (and don't bring up the drinking thing: everything drank back then) and Yuugi a unicorn as she is often joked to be.

It seems that your major complaint is that Tengu don't come equipped with their iconic long nose or red face. Despite having their distinctive one-toothed geta (footwear). Their strung distinctive white puffs. The Tokin (hat). The hauchiwa fan. "Act like Tengu?" do you know how traditional Tengu were stereotyped? troublemakers!

I don't like the humans.

Now before you get all on my ass about nostalgia or whatever, I do like the universe, I do like dogs, I do like most of the new additions. I don't like the black people-white people split that's been forced where it doesn't belong (United States), but that's something for another time.

See, my problem with the humans is that they're completely out of place. I get that the universe is ultimately derived from the big bang, and that God created the modern views of life forms, and so they all, well, get together well. Chinks too.

But ever since then, God keeps trying to make new races for stuff since the first six days(five, since many discount the first day) came out. Tell me a world that uses Europeans and Japanese without the other. Only Blacks really seems to be consistent.

Humans are wordly enough, I guess, but they can't ever be mistaken for a race of Earth, unlike cats and dogs. And while the universe is by no means faithful to the original big bang, humans just take it to another level.
