I spend a lot of time reading actual novels (Fiction primarily), and I would agree that most visual novel's stories do not meet the standards I'd set for a novel. However, part of that is that most Visual Novels fall in the romance category, and very little writing is as dependent on the ability to place yourself in the shoes of a protagonist as Romance... And that is something that I don't really do.

There are visual novels with stories that I quite enjoy, and there are novels that I don't enjoy whatsoever. Part of the problem with using vague terms such as "Good Story" is that there are a lot of things that go into a good story. A visual novel has an advantage in the story department for some people, due to the fact that there are images.

Now it may seem odd to mention images when talking about story, but the simple fact of the matter is that images can help make the narrative flow better. Sure, amazing descriptions are part of a good story, but occasionally books are made worse by the way authors get too into describing every little part of the environment, etc. With images, there's no need for description. You're looking at it, and so the text doesn't have to bludgeon the details into your head.

Sure, if you want action or pretty pictures, you'd see a movie, and if you wanted provoking description and elegant writing, you'd read a book, but VNs are capable of incorporating both.
(Note I say 'capable'; VNs aren't really treated seriously enough as a medium on the whole, but I believe if someone with enough talent tried, they could make a VN comparable in quality to any good book or movie).
