Should I be recruiting generics to help garrison and generate income, or are the characters I pick up along the way sufficient? I've been getting along well enough without any generics but I'm just curious if I'm doing it wrong.

I'd say yes,

But don't listen to me, I'm studying for finals to avoid getting raped by vampires.

Yes, mostly. The students you get in school chapter are good because you can put them at maximum loyalty for free and they're cheap. So long as you have spots to put them in National, keep recruiting generics whose pay is less than their income. Maintaining law doesn't matter as much (only one region can decline a turn and the chance of a skull in any single declined region is low) and it only costs 10 BP to fix it anyway. I wouldn't spend any effort refilling generics loyalty if it gets low though.

Outside of haniwas, basic schoolgirls have the best ratio of cost to income, followed by the Academy archers and then the Nightmare archers. Don't forget that generics get a free loyalty level up (about halves loyalty loss) by talking to them once.

Thanks for the input. I'm kind of far along in the National chapter to make any drastic changes now, but good to know for future playthroughs.

Is this game fun?
Honest question.

I've seen it for quite a while now popping up randomly on the frontpage.

I'm assuming you're on Kunagi's route. The special ability of the pirates on Senna's is to attack any region on the map, so you need a small army everywhere or just resign yourself to giving up a number of territories.

I don't know, but I think I'm approaching 20 hours of gameplay time, which I take as a good sign.

It is, but none of the interface is translated yet, so I'd hold off unless you can read basic kanji.

you don't need to know any kanji to know the stats in this game, just remembering their location is enough.

all the game mechanics are in the daibanchou wiki too
