I have a hard time picking a favorite visual novel, because a lot of the ones I've played are all good in their own way. For the purpose of this discussion, I will define my "favorite" as the VN that provoked the strongest emotional reaction from me

Umineko, by far. Haters gunna hate, but that series has me by the emotional ballsack, and I love it

If we define my favorite as a VN that has built the best or most engrossing atmosphere, letting me get totally lost in its world, then I'd say Saya no Uta. Playing that shit at 2am was a definite way to creep myself out

In terms of pure JESUS FUCK, PLOT TWIST OF THE YEAR ALL YEARS? Ever17. I shat a gothic cathedral when I realized how the two routes branching out from the decision you make in the elevator relate to eachother

So, yeah. I do want to make a mention of Cross Channel, though: I'm playing through it right now, and I'll be damned if it isn't giving Umineko a run for its money in terms of taking me on an emotional rollercoaster

Swan Song. The story is beautiful, actually displaying how people change and break under extreme circumstances, character developement is some of the best I have seen in visual novel. The presentation, art and music are also excellent.

Personally for me the most important things are the dialogues, or rather the quality of the prose in general.
What I want from VNs are great and memorable banters with characters full of personality and great scenes that really manage to touch something within you.

So for now, my favorites are probably Muramasa and Subahibi since they are the closest to my ideal, Swan Song is close as well.

The "execution" in a novel is simply the quality of the writing as a whole, which include things like the pacing, consistency, the way the themes are brought out and the quality of the prose.

I favor great banters because that's my taste, but of course I value everything, I don't think any novels that has great dialogues can be "boring" or "shitty" in the same way I don't think that a a story with lots of LOL EPIC LOOK AT ALL THE FIGHTS AND SHIT HITTING THE FAN is inherently superior to a story more subdued.

CLANNAD. Its music is probably the main contributor--it's also my favorite visual novel OST. Beyond that, all the heroines (and some of the sub-heroines like Yukine) were likable, supernatural stuff didn't play as prominent of a role as it did in Kanon or AIR, and the last half of the After Story was quite touching.

Baldr Sky for me.

There really isn't anything I dislike like about it, when for my other favorites there usually is something that I dislike in them, but this isn't the case for Baldr Sky.

What I really liked about it was the plot and how it was told, never have I seen memory loss and flasbacking used so greatly as plot device and story telling method. Besides that altough there were some bit cliched moments I didn't mind them as they were well executed . Also liked how it all made sense quite nicely in the end and foreshadowing was done nicely too, overally great story.
Besides those the characters were all really good and had some great interaction with each other. The OST was great too and there was fitting music for every situation, besides I often listen tracks from it. Also the gameplay it had in it was pretty addictive for me and didn't hinder story at all, in fact it made some the immersion often better.

In the end there really isn't anything bad I can say about Baldr Sky as it did everything I like with great quality, one of the greatest things that I have played/read in my life

Personally I used to like Umineko up to episode 3 and even participated in the threads here.
Then I later realized that it was getting more and more stupid so I basically gave up on it though I still read every new installments.

I think lots of people who have been in /jp/ for a while are the same, it's obvious that the Umineko fanbase now is very different from the fanbase of episode 1-2-3 back when they were released.

Oh well, not like I care, lots of great VNs are translated these days, I pity the people who only focus on Umineko and nothing else.

I use Win7 with little to no problems on my notebook. Netbooks have a small screen and shitty keyboard. I also have a USB mouse for gameplay VNs like Utawarerumono (near impossible to combo with the touchpad).

Clannad for many reasons. It made me cry more than anything ever has (both sad and happy tears). The themes and character growth were great. It has one of my favorite protagonists, some of my favorite heroines, and a good supporting cast. The humor in the school life section was also great.

That's what I would want to know. It started with my eyes getting really worse within a short span, now I have to use glasses. I was so many times at the eyes fags and they cannot say much more than tell me to use drops against extremely dry eyes even though they don't do shit besides to ease the effects.
Since winter it got really bad and they do not shit anymore and I have pain constantly, I even wake up with headaches every day and just like now I'm on my 6th beer to ease the pain.

I'm sick of it and have appointments this and next week at the dermatologist and internist because at the same time my skin got worse and feels dry so there might be a connection, some sort of allergy or internal problems like diabetes because in most cases of chronic dry eyes like here (18 months now) the problems are never found out and have to do with something else.

Uh, one of the points to Kenichi was that when you strip off everything, the other characters weren't that far below him(and he even states that Mana kicks his ass), and were capable of feats that even Kenichi doubts himself to be capable of. It's part of how there's a society that has a job for people that are "super awesome and above everyone else" but when you get down to the nitty gritty, the majority of them are just humans like everyone else. Most of Kenichi's likability comes from his growth through the game and how by the end, he's finally worthy of being considered awesome.

Also yes, that book series in Sharin is supposed to be like our world, yes. That's obvious to anyone who actually played and has a brain

Although I'm not sure what referencing books has anything to do with knowledge. The game points out that knowledge itself is completely unimportant, it's wisdom that counts
