When I get drunk I often go on a rant on how difficult it is to gather faith. Not strictly in the religious sense, but in everyday life. You have to work very hard at it to both gain and maintain faith. Not only do you have to gather it in the first place, any mistake and you'll lose it very fast.
It may be hard, but it is worth it once you reap the rewards.

I became familiarized through it when I read a couple Sanae comedy doujins a while back.
Nagano's a pretty isolated place, so they didn't really have seafood or any of the other well known Japanese food, so they made do with what they could get.

I looked it up and searched for just a couple seconds, and it seems that the Suwa shrine gave out amulets with "permission to eat deer" written on them. It seems like the shrine heavily encouraged hunting of deer especially, until the government stopped them
