Repostin because I can. Playing with real tiles is pretty awesome, setting up between games isn't nearly as much a hassle as I thought'd it be, and I'm just using a pen and paper to do points instead of sticks, it seems easier.
Still need to find 1 person, 4p with 3p is still very fun, but could be better.

The first time I riichi'd, the first time I ever riichi'd while playing with real tiles that is, I got an ippatsu tsumo, I heard that was extremely rare, even though it happens on tenhou quite a bit. Feels good man.

I just made a quick google search and was surprised to find a mahjong club in my city. Should I go? Does anyone have any experience with moving from computer mahjong to real tiles? For example, I'm worried about not knowing when I'm in tenpai (mostly for chinitsu and similar stuff). Or sometimes I don't notice a possible wait.

>> No.4769143

>>4769044
Are you dumb or blind? Because if you're neither, I don't understand how you can "not know when you're in tenpai". You should worry more about not knowing how to read a poker face, or about showing signs of nervousness when you're in tenpai for something big.

>> No.4769166

>>4769044

If it's a riichi mahjong club, the hardest part will be dealing with sitting at a table with a bunch of weeaboos for an extended period of time. But seriously, knowing your waits shouldn't really be a big deal as long as you're not a total beginner. Practice at bamboo mahjong if you're not confident. The biggest problem with playing in real life is that no one knows how to score hands. It gets to be a pain when someone turns their hand over for a ron and then just stares at everyone expecting to get points without saying how much it's worth.

>> No.4769211

>It gets to be a pain when someone turns their hand over for a ron and then just stares at everyone expecting to get points without saying how much it's worth.

This. A million times this. But if you're the only one there who knows how to score well, then its kinda like being the banker in monopoly.

Odds are that if there's a random mahjong club it's a bunch of chinese dudes who have no idea that there are other variants that exist. But you might have fun, or they might have some interest in riichi mahjong.

>> No.4769324

>>4769143
Have you never gotten a hand full of tiles of the same suit? Of course if I take some time I can see that I'm in tenpai. But I don't want to stare at my hand for 30 seconds to figure out all of the waits, you know? I've started playing bamboo mahjong though, hopefully that will help.

>>4769166
It's a riichi mahjong club. The closest thing to weeaboo on their website is "Many of us have a higher than normal interest in Asia". They seem to take the game seriously, I'm sure they know how to count points.

>> No.4769370

>>4769324

>I'm sure they know how to count points.

You should still learn. Print up a score chart and keep it in your pocket if you can't memorize it right away, but at least know how to do han and fu. I play with a guy who always tries to cheat people out of points by underscoring their hands and overscoring his own.

I didn't deny there are a lot of players when an anime about Mahjong is airing. But these aren't what I would call "regular" players. They just stop playing when the trend is over. By definition, a regular player is someone who doesn't need an anime airing to be interested in the game.

What kind of twisted logic is that? Oh wait, it was posted by AoA.

You can't say "75%" without already knowing what tiles the other people have. I once had a situation where I needed a 1, 4, or 7 (1234567, waiting for my pair), and some guy declared richi. He managed to tsumo on his 8 bamboo even though three others were out there. You know where the tiles I needed were at? The guy next to me had THREE OF EACH. In that situation, there was literally a 0% chance of victory.

You can calculation the perspective odds based on what you see, but unless you know what is in the other person's hand, you really have no idea of knowing and can only hope that the perspective odds are in your favor.

Wrong. When flipping a coin, all knowledge about the coin is known. You know is has a head side and a tail side. What you don't know is how your hand will react and how it will flip the coin. The same goes for Mahjong. If you're waiting on a 5 tile and somebody has a 3-4-5 in their hand, you know that they won't discard it (unless they're being a trolling faggot). What you don't know is what tiles will come out of the wall. Using that, you can predict the odds of drawing the tile from the way or somebody else drawing it and discarding it, hence "real odds".

4th place again? I'm fucking jinxed. This is the only good thing that happened to me in this game, but my hope was ruined pretty fast.

You know what pisses me off? When some faggot gets a 12000+ scoring hand within the first 4 turns and doesn't even declare richi first. You're building your hand, looks good, OH WHOOPS SOME FAG JUST GOT TSUMO THERE GOES 8000 POINTS

Thats the joke. Hax can happen which is just absurd luck, so absurd (tenhous or whatever) that it is borderline cheating, or in the case of not playing online, actually cheating.

This was one of the most intense east only's I ever played. Was in the dan room, 16ton must have miscalculated his hands value and I won only 1100 points ahead and the other guy was put to -400 so it ended.

I think it is more "discard the wrong tiles, fail miserably" Which is generally how people end up in last place, by dealing into obvious hands.

Whenever I get an all-character hand, I don't care of its value or what place I'm at. All-character hands are my favorite ones to get. I knew I wasn't going to win anyway when people were declaring richi or tsumo/ronning within the first 5 turns nearly every round anyway.

No dora, uradora, red fives, or iipeekoo unfortunately, but when I saw Oneesama richi, I wasn't waiting for a better wait just so he could win with a 800 hand.

Basic Mahjong Strategy (everything you need to know to be a bro)
1. This isn't the tile clicking game.
2. If you have 356 of one suit, its a good idea to discard the 3, don't ask why, just do it.
3. You need at least one yaku to go out. Calling "chi" at random will not get you that yaku.
4. Don't gamble with money, wager a body part instead.
5. Calling "pon" on a set of dragons will get you a yaku. Ignore everyone at the table when they make faces and exclaim "GOIN' FOR DEM FANPIEZ!!"
6. Calling "pon" four times will get you a yaku. Ignore everyone at the table when they make faces and exclaim "GOIN' FOR DEM TOY-TOYZ!!"

I'll bet there's a shitload of strategy to mahjong, but I have no idea where to find it, at least not in English. My "strategy" in mahjong is just study my opponents construct their hands, and occasionally dealing habits. I have no idea how these mahjong shows come up with "but that wasn't a SAFE TILE. What was he thinking with that discard!??!?!?!" I'm completely unaware of any system of determining whether or not a specific play is risky or not. I just get a gut feeling. Do you guys use any complex strategy in your game?

More tips from a true Mahjong master:
-Get a good rest before each match because if you don't the tiles will look blurry.
-If you think you'll need a certain tile DON'T DISCARD IT.
-Know what you're doing, I can't stress this enough.
-Use your eyes to watch players, especially your peripheral vision. Always keep an eye on other players, don't even look at your own hand.
-Bad body odor and dead fish in coat pocket will give you an edge in the game.
If you are wondering why a total noob managed to extract such complex and useful information so easily, its because he's very observant.
