I was thinking about this the other day, and from a certain perspective, Rance may be a better person than we give him credit for.

We talk about how his actions are horrible from OUR perspective, but think about how they look from his. Setting aside for the moment that he just likes sex and violence, his experiences with them have been largely positive. If a normal guy discovered that every woman he raped enjoyed it, and that he just doing whatever he wanted turned out to make him the world's hero, then he probably would turn out pretty much like Rance.

Still, it's not rare for a character to be compatible with a few different alignments (Robin Hood could have been Lawful or Chaotic, so there's quite a range there) and this means he could be seen as Neutral. The Rance team is the only reliable source of information, until they actually come and say that events that can only be seen during "if" routes didn't happen in others, we can only guess. None of them just laugh it off and give the rapist a hearty slap on the back. Unless power intervenes, as power can intervene on the behalf of any criminal, for any crime. Those with power, and money usually translates into power as well, are able to get away with things those without power cannot. Because no system of justice or morality is perfect, and corruption is a uniquely human vice.

Rape is a universal crime. Punishments vary. Treatment of the victims vary. The lengths a culture will go to blame the victim or find justifications for certain perpetrators will vary.

In some cultures, there are arranged marriages where the female does not want sexual relations with the stranger (her husband). Refusing to marry or to have sex would result in her death one way or another (some places women are not allowed to work and can't get enough money from begging on the streets), so she has sex with the stranger even though she doesn't want to. I'd say that's rape. It's perfectly legal and it's not only present, it's *extremely common*.

In some cities, if a man rapes a woman it is automatically believed that she enticed him. If the woman is married her husband is considered a lawful man for murdering his wife, and the rapist goes free anyway.

Rape is most definitely not considered evil in every culture.
