She unfurled a brown paper bag from inside her sleeves, and gestured for me to put the medication inside it. As the last of them clinked into her bag, I held my hands out in a receptive gesture, but she shook her head firmly.

“I can-” I started to say, but she faced her back to me and flicked a tail at my face.

“You’re injured.” Ran said curtly. Her tails flicked again, several of them narrowly grazing me.

I didn’t have a good response to that. I stood up and stepped out of the room. Ran tensed up, as if she were about to lunge at or perhaps catch me, but followed me without further incident.

“I’m really sorry.” Chen mumbled as I crossed the doorway.

I stopped, and ruffled Chen's hair, making her duck, close her eyes, and hold on to the edges of her mob cap.

“Don't worry about it.” I said. “Every man needs a few scars he can boast about winning to his friends. I can say I wrestled with a ferocious youkai and everyone in the village will think I’m wicked cool.”

My attempted smile was undermined somewhat by the twinge of pain it brought. Chen lowered her hands slowly, her eyes slowly opening to stare at me. I stepped off, and she waited for a moment as I passed so that she could walk beside Ran.

“It’s a learning experience.” Ran said lightly.

We stepped outside the Yagokoro clinic as I nodded as vigorously as I dared. “It is indeed. You-”

“I wasn’t talking to Chen.” Ran replied.

I stopped and turned to look at her. Her face was as blank as a still pond, and she walked with a determined purpose up to my side.

“Repeat that on a full-grown cat youkai. See what happens.” Ran said as she brushed past me.

She emphasised this comment with a soft snort. I took off with a start, half-running for a moment to catch up with her and Chen, and together we walked back towards the Human Village. But an awkward silence hung in the air as we walked.

“You didn’t have to pay for me.” I said quietly.

We were nearing the gateway into the Human Village. Ran stopped, her ears flicked, and a slight hint of a frown darkened her eyes. Hands crept into opposite sleeves, and she leaned in a little towards me as she spoke.

“Of course I did. Inadvisable as it was to wrestle a youkai, and irrespective of whether or not it was intentional, Chen still hurt you. I believe I should have been more diligent with keeping her nails closely trimmed. Thus it is my responsibility.” She looked once at the village, and back to me. “I shall leave you here. You still reek of blood, but you are safe in sight of the village now.”

I bowed low and thanked Ran greatly, making her blush and turn her head aside, mumbling, “You really don't have to.”

Next I turned to Chen, and wished her luck. She, too, averted her gaze and mumbled something so quietly that I couldn't even hear it. I set off, their waving hands at my back. In my heart, I hoped that our friendship was not harmed by this day.

Water splashed across my face. I watched the water wash away my morning ointment into the sink. My daily pill habit certainly seemed to work. One morning, a week after the incident, I washed the ointment off my face only to look down and see that there in the basin was a length of black medical string. From that day forwards I carefully checked the sink.

Seeing nothing, I looked up and made a realisation. The mirror reflected flesh that was healing far better than I had anticipated. Where the red lines stretched over my eyebrows, new hairs were already sprouting. In another week it looked as if I might have smooth, perfectly regular skin without the memory of a wound. I might not even get to tell anyone about my heroic fight against a youkai.

The faint sound of a knock at the door disturbed my thoughts. I stepped through the hallway, taking a moment to look at the antique grandfather clock in my living room. Precisely eight AM. I slid the door open, and saw the person who had come at the exact same time every day for the past week. Or, rather, looked up to see her.

“Have you put the ointment on today? Have you taken your meds?” Ran asked. It was the exact same line she’d said every morning.

I nodded, my head barely moving before I saw Ran’s nostrils subtly flare and her slit pupils slowly trace up and down my face.

“You don’t need to do this.” I said.

“You’re right, I don’t.” Ran replied.

She stood at my doorway, watching me, waiting. Her stare was like daggers boring into my eyeballs. I cracked first, stepping aside inwards, and gesturing into my house.

“Would you like to come in?” I asked.

“Thank you.” Ran replied.

She slid her shoes off and ducked across the threshold. Instantly, she strode right on past me, her thick mass of fluff softly brushing against me as she passed. Then she was gone, rapidly tapping feet down the hallway and turning into my kitchen. Under normal circumstances, I would be bothered, but I simply blinked and shrugged it off.

Her departure revealed a small Chen, who nervously hid half her body with the doorframe. Wide eyes couldn’t decide whether to look at me, at where Ran had vanished, or into the ground. I waved in the general direction of inside my home.

“Come on in.” I whispered to Chen.

This made her jerkily step into the house. She still refused to look at me.

“Can I get you something?” Ran called from inside. “Tea? Breakfast?”

“Tea, please. I already ate.” I said, as I guided Chen into my living room.

A pause, as a soft clatter of pots and pans percolated through the house. “You shouldn’t exert yourself while you’re injured.”

I reminded myself that she was just trying to help as I sat down at my table and waved a hesitant Chen into sitting across from me.

“I brought you this.” Chen said.

She bowed over, presenting a card to me. On the front it read “SORRY I HURT YOU”. Chen’s brown eyes peeked over the lip of the card as I looked inside, scanning over a short paragraph expressing her remorse.

With a chuckle, I replied, “I told you already, it’s all forgiven.”

Ran sat the tray of mugs in front of me. I jumped. I hadn't heard her approach. Nor did I expect the very next thing she'd do was plop herself down beside me, facing me. Her soft hands immediately seized my face, probing at it, gently pushing the flesh, looking into where the new red skin emerged from ruptured old skin.

“You’re healing well!” Ran said with a smile.

Her hands dropped away, catching on my wrist, gently guiding it onto her thigh. I stiffened up as her soft body leaned in further and further into me until her head was resting atop mine. Four pairs of eyes looked at Chen, who pouted her lips and tilted her head aside. After a moment, she looked aside, and climbed out of her seat to peruse my overstuffed bookcase. She settled on the section of books for young girls I'd collected recently, and opened one up.

“How would you like to make another one?” Ran asked softly.

“What?” I said, repeating myself again and again. The word kept coming out of my mouth. I looked from Chen to Ran, as my brain slowly realised exactly what she'd meant.

Ran giggled, and laced her fingers in with mine. “You’re very good with kids, you know. You’ve got the spirit. I wouldn’t mind if we tried for one.”

Stunned silence was all that greeted her comment.

Ran’s hand withdrew from mine, for a brief, cold moment, before both her arms wrapped around my chest and pulled me into her.

“Have a think about it. In a few months we can really have this conversation. There’s a…” and it was her turn to have her voice trail away. “thing coming up, and I might need a helper too.”

She squeezed my chest tightly at that, so tight that I couldn’t form a reply even if I imagined what to say. A second passed. Her grip slackened, her head lowered so low her lips brushed against my nape as she gave a skin tingling, goosebump raising husky whisper.

“I’ll come get you when it starts.”
