After pretty much most of the weekend drawing with some /jp/ hikkis on flockdraw I can pretty much tell that most of /jp/ wants to learn to draw but they feel that they can't.

Now I'm no art master or even art student, I just doodle. I can pass on some advice. First of all if you honestly down to earth want to learn to draw, the first thing to do is just draw. That's the first step. It can be anything you want, drawing pictures of touhous or still life. The first step is to just draw what you see. Pay close attention to what you are drawing and its relation to other parts on the picture. That touhou, where is her collar in relation to her hip? Think about the picture and use landmarks to help you draw.

Follow this first step and within a few months you will start to see some serious progress. If you do it religiously even less.

If you would like some good instrutions on learning to draw I would suggest Andrew Loomis - Fun with a Pencil. Following this book will teach you one of the most important aspects of art: the simplifcation of shapes. It also teachs you many other techniques that are helpful.

Honestly keep at it no matter what you do. When I first started I would give up and say I had no talent (I skipped art classes at school, bad idea) but now I can pretty much draw what I like. If you can spend an hour a day drawing or even 30 minutes.

And remember drawing is really enjoyable when you are drawing what you like. Even anime.

TLDR: Draw smart, work hard, earn skill

Ah, it's annoying though, the problem with doodling, is you do it (..or at least I do it) whenever you could between something 'important'. Math classes and the like.

Now, with virtually unlimited time do draw anything, (Virtually a NEET here) I find it difficult to bring myself to draw anything, too busy now distracting myself from drawing (which had been a distraction from working) with MMOs mindless banter on IRC and listlessly browsing the chans..

And it always aggravating. So much crap bottled up in my head I want to draw, and I have difficulty getting it down on paper.

Any suggestion for that?

I've thought of colouring what others have drawn but I don't like it, it just doesn't feel like it's my own (because it's not, obviously). What I have done in the past is: someone made a sketch for me, I inked it in Flash and then did (shitty) shading in PS. I have in the past doodled sketches of very basic cartoon characters but anything more complex always looked horrible. By now I have too much doubt that I could ever become decent that it stops me from doing anything at all.

It also doesn't help that my room is a mess, my desk is a mess, my computer is a complete mess and my head is a mess also.

I have three tips, since I was basically in the same boat for a long time:

1-Only draw things you like (whether that be touhou or whatever). This way your drawing will have some meaning to you even if it's ugly.

2-Draw very simple images and only copy images when you first start out. This way you can see some success and understand what you're doing wrong much more quickly ( something like "huh, there isn't enough room for the eyes, I guess I made the face smaller than it was supposed to be".)

3-Listen to music that you really enjoy while drawing. This makes any task more enjoyable, so it'll help you get the urge to start.

Thanks, yes I should start with simple things first, and I actually do tell myself that there will be failure and I shouldn't be disheartened by it. Actually, accepting failure and that it doesn't mean that if you failed once you have completely failed or will keep failing is something I'm trying to learn. Same with that I need to tell myself I don't have to finish things in one go, that some things take a while and that, regrettably, not everything will end up perfect.

I listen to music a lot, but I get distracted by it when doing work, so I usually don't do anything except maybe casually browse while listening to music.

OP here guys.

It's good to see everyone gets the most important part which is just to draw. That is when all things start, by just doing it. For those who want to progress a bit further in art then just doodles you would need to start learning art theory. Anime is easy and fun to draw but it is ultimately art at a very simple form, some might argue otherwise but it's what I understand from it. And once you start going through art theory you realise just how much you didn't know about art and just how hard it can be. If you can hold on art theory for a few years you will start to see some insane improvements. You could even draw at doujin or better level too. This takes years and even once you think you've mastered it you will find another difficulty curve. For those who want that more information on art theory hit up this place http://www.icrit.org/resources.html Theres loads of information here available. From what I can remember the first steps of art theory are anatomy, aesthetics, construction and the 3 perspective points.

It's good to see /jp/ really does want to do something you just gotta have that willpower to start. I know it's hard, I also have problems starting but you just got to try your hardest to convince yourself, once you start time will just fly by.

Seconded, I would love more info on this.

People are always obsessed with anatomy, but that's only a small part of the battle. I feel that the use of color and light can make a simple "anime" drawing into something a bit more complex.

You should attempt to fill it with more detail and proper form rather than taking quick shortcuts (such as leaving dots for eyes). Also heads tend to be more oval in shape, rather than circular. You should use proper reference at all times in order to understand better what you're drawing. Grab a picture of any mans/womens/touhous face and try to mimic what you see.

Better, but I can tell you didn't use reference. Noses don't point outwardly like that, especially at the angle the head is facing. the pupils tend to cover more of the whites in the eye and are more than just dots - you're still skimping on the details. I also suggest moving the mouth lower and getting a proper nose in there. The proportions are a little off. Fix the details of and around the eyes. Lips, cheeks, eye sockets, etc, the more you emphasize these things the more dynamic your face will look. Try using a smaller brush to draw more accurately.

You're improving already. The eyes are too oval, and a tad too huge, unless you want to go for the kawaii uguu~ look I suggest making the eyes smaller. The eyebrows are too straight, look at a face to see how they curve along the skull and apply it to your image. The lips look silly, and need to have a more curvy shape. Once again look at a picture of a face to see how it should be formed. Also, I don't understand whats going on with the snail hat thing, but its messing up the forehead. For proportion sake, you should probably change the hat. Also add some ears.

For the eyebrows, you randomly scribbled squiggly lines so they don't follow any sort of curvature. What you have is better than before, just try various strokes rather than just one giant scribbly line. Or a single line if you want thinner eyebrows. The right ear isnt down far enough, and the right side of the head is bulging - make the right side more smooth and symmetrical to the left. The ends of the eyes are too square and flat, make them more pointed (but not too pointed of course, more of an oval shape). Lips still need work, and the snail hat is still blowing my mind away. Keep at it though, it's kinda fun critiquing this.

Well this isn't a true artfag thread, more a novice/spare time draw thread. Nothing wrong with copying as long as your going about it the right way. Don't just think about copying the lines down, think about the shapes, the creases, the clothes etc. Treat it as if it's a life drawing class. Copying manga or anime isn't any good for true artist skill but for fun there isn't anything wrong with it

>> No.4767253

Sorry, pretty late to the thread, but I just wanted to say this: try to find others to draw with whether it's opencanvas, in real life, anything. I've found it much more motivtional to draw when there're others with me, as opposed to just doing it on my own. When you have friends to watch what you are doing, commenting and criticising / suggesting on your drawings, I found it to be a real motivation to keep going.
