Besides, there's no point making a topic if it's just going to be an imagedump or stupid meme-slinging.

Yukari is still pretty popular among most of us, the problem comes more from fans hyping up her strength and making her out to be the mother fucking Flash of Touhou; able to achieve anything with her poorly defined powers and ought to be able to defeat anyone.

It ignores a key part of Yukari Yakumo, she's a schemer. A direct show of force simply isn't Yukari's style, it never had been and never will be. Sure it's fun for doujin artists like Chado to draw up a massive DBZ style fight, or for neck beards to argue about her capabilities, but the thing that makes Yukari so attractive as a character in the first place is her evasive twisted nature. Nothing she does is what it seems, schemes within schemes Yukari plots on the very long term in ways only a few could begin to comprehend.

For a true powerhouse character with combat ability, you need to look to youkai like Suika and Yuka, Yuka especially because of her direct nature. For a powerful but direct mastermind you've got Kanako who is clearly working towards her own agenda but it's not exactly hidden. In comparison Yukari's methods are convoluted to the point where it borders (oh ho) on insanity, she approaches problems from completely unexpected angles obfuscating her objectives with both clear and hidden feints.

The point is, when someone fights Yukari, she is never really serious, often smiling as she laughs off a defeat and retreats having spun the circumstances to her favour. Yukari has never been a direct force kind of youkai. She is a schemer by nature and her powers only support this.

I'm not sure what the you're looking for. There's nothing particularly wrong with using an overdone idea if you can wrap it up and present it well. There's a LOT of Touhou doujinshi that were neat in concept, just poorly executed. If you can present an idea well enough, even people that don't like the idea by itself can enjoy it as a whole.

In turn, she helps to make Yuyuko more interesting then she may be otherwise. Though Yukari we see a lot of her interactions with Yuyuko and how the two of them seem to have a unspoken understanding, they are both very intelligent but have amusing ways of showing it.

Yukari is rather playful, seemingly uncaring most of the time but seems to revel in her reputation as a schemer. When she offers a plan, has a good idea on who will actually follow it and who will attempt to see through it and act differently, it's almost like a game to her.

Then we have Yuyuko who is much more laid back, in a similar vein she has a odd sense of humour and will lead people around her to think she's a bit of a ditzy ghost acting on impulse, perhaps sometimes she really is acting on impulse but more often then not she's just not explaining the logic behind her thinking, instead pretending it's just a whim she'll push on to advance her friends plan without even having to have discussed it.

I've explained this once or twice to /tg/ before, Yukari gets a reputation for being a powerhouse around the community, but it's pretty clear that ZUN has been trying to present her as a schemer since the beginning. SSiB supports this idea and further went on to show that Yukari isn't all powerful, hate the moon bitches as much as we like, the dominance of Lunarian technology combined with their spiritual power has been around since Imperishable Night so it's not completely unreasonable that they are a serious threat to Gensokyo if things were to get out of hand. You could even argue that Yukari could have won or at least survived a fight against them, but what would happen to her beloved Gensokyo? In any case, she schemed her way around it from a start and the whole idea was nothing more then a bit of petty revenge and typical youkai acting up.

I'm not even offended at the idea Yukari could get her ass kicked by Suika or several other of the powerhouses wandering Gensokyo. I've always felt the idea of Yukari as the ultimate youkai as being rather over the top, she's much more interesting as a particularly clever schemer with a strong ability in thinking outside of the box (with a power that perfectly matches). Sort of like the Patrician in Discworld, her methods may seem like insanity, but they have a odd sort of twisted logic that works when looked at from a big enough scale and maybe from a funny angle.

ZUN explicitly stated the Hakurei border couldn't be circumvented by the lunarians; hence the reason why gensokyo wasn't in any danger of a lunarian invasion. Also, when you speak of the "great" lunarian army in truth you're only referring to the Watatsuki sisters. Everyone else in the lunarian army is pretty much on par with an above average human.

Also, this is just a testament to how weak every character in the Touhouverse is in general. The humans on earth were actually winning against the lunarians despite the fact that a) they didn't have any magic, b) the lunarians had the hometown advantage, and c) the lunarians took them off guard with a sneak attack that initiated the war. The only reason why the humans lost is because they weren't able to find the lunar capital. Oh and by humans we're obviously referring to the American military. That said, looking at it comically isn't a problem. It's nice to joke about Yukari being the mother fucking FLASH but when you get down to it alot of Yukari hate comes from people who insist she's unbeatable when really Yukari is the kind of person who doesn't see defeat in the same way as most would and finds ways to extract opportunity from it, even if it wasn't part of her plans.

not so much a HURR DURR, THIS IS CANON thread, so much as a discussion about the characters and what we feel is their best representations. A lot of this is supposition as most hasn't been explicitly stated.

Canon does come into it, but more as 'this is what the setting says, so we work things out from this'. Part of the point is to say what elements we don't overly like, for example when people take a character trait too far or hype up their favourite to say she can't lose.

The same folks that struggled to secure a nation of poor sand niggers.

When Maribel sleeps she dreams that she is Yukari and when Yukari sleeps she dreams she is Maribel. Because Yukari is nocturnal and is known to sleep during the day neither of them would normally be awake at the same time. Maribel is strangely able to cross the border into Gensokyo while dreaming. Maribel's clothes are also very similar to Yukari's clothing from Perfect Cherry Blossom. Gensokyo itself was created in Maribel's dreams.

The small minority of good users on 4chan in general frown upon such behavior—much in the same way as they look down upon bad grammar, forced memes, and trolls. I've had some good Touhou discussions there, but they are rare examples, most Touhou posted on /tg/ these days is either a troll or touhoufag posting about 4th Ed D&D optimisation which isn't my thing. Very rarely there are excellent discussions on the setting and characters, some of my best discussions were in those threads, but they don't come often and are generally trolled most the time people try.

No, it just means the Lunarians and the Earth had to duke it out the way Japan and the United States did during WWII. The Lunarians were obviously unprepared for such a strong retaliatory strike. And there's that matter of Kaguya still not having returned.

The lunar war is a testament to how much ZUN fails at storytelling. How is it even possible that the American military of the late 60s were on par with the lunarian military? It's just not possible. Let's do a comparison, shall we. America as a nation has only existed for 2 centuries. Eirin alone is at least 10 times older than the USA. Since lunarians live longer that means they're inherently more productive and smarter than us. By the time we managed to invent the lightbulb the lunarians probably had fusion technology. And this isn't even taking into consideration of how much faster innovations would occur with the help of magic. Not to mention the fact that we humans (even to this day) are hopeless in a space environment. In WW2 we struggled to get our guys on a beach in Normandy. The time, money, and effort it would have took to bring 20 (let alone 200) troops to the moon back in the 70s would have bankrupted even the richest of Nations. Not to mention the fact that once these untrained space soldiers got on the moon they would have been.... What the fuck am I even saying. This is retarded.

Either I'm overestimating the power of the lunarians or ZUN is a shitty storyteller.

You're not underestimating the Lunarians, you're overestimating the difficulty of dropping soldiers on the Moon's surface. Hypothetically speaking, in the ZUNIverse the Apollo launches as we knew them were a simple cover-up for the main events Moonside. The main powers of the Lunarians were uninvolved, and the skirmishes fought were between the Lunar Defense Corps and NASA.
We've seen in SSIB that they are strong enough, but not ridiculously overpowered like, say, a Space Marine. They're on the level with your average first-world footsoldier.

The conflict was not entirely unlike the Soviet-Afghan wars, if you substitute the Afghans for the Americans and the Soviets for the Lunarians.

Cold blood? Only very warm blood could make her go to such lengths for Kaguya.

>> No.4739469

Reading this thread made me sure 99% of you people don't read canon materials and just make up bullshit.

Lunarians kicked USA's army ass with ease, the only reason americans gained a foothold on the moon was because lunarians didn't want to fight them at first, they wanted to coexist. Read Kaguya's profile. Reisen fled the moon before the real war even begun. If lunarians fought for real Toyohime would just warp to Washington DC and erase it with her fan. Then do the same to every big american city.

And humans can't unthink youkai. It's stated a dozen of times in canon material that they can break the barrier any time without much consequences. And they often leave it to hunt humans in the outside world.

What? Remember when rabbits fought SDM maids? One of them took them all. All moon rabbits soldiers are at similar level to Reisen and can use high level magic. That whole war was most likely 10 rabbits from the defense corp vs US army.

Yes. A Navy and a standing Army. They know how to use the tools of modern warfare. They have armor, air support, attacking craft, and artillery. The Empire of the Moon is canonically strong enough to defend the entire Solar System, I haven't forgotten.
