I can't exactly help you with that, since the earliest mainline title I've played is MoF. But in more broad comparison: instead of stages you have individual scenes, which are grouped into levels; earlier scenes inside level are akin to nonspells, later scenes are explicit spellcards. You don't need to pass all scenes in succession, once you are hit and die you can restart a scene or pick another one you have unlocked. You complete a scene after getting required number of photos. Since you can play a single scene over and over it is faster to learn patterns and less punishing to try a different strategy, but it has a completely different pacing then mainline title, which might be off-putting at first.
You have three speeds, unfocused/focused/charging, with unfocused being FAST, focused being similiar to focused Marisa (maybe even faster) and charging being around focused Reimu. You will need all three of them and you will need to learn which to pick for a given moment. There are gimmicks for some bosses, like Reisen, Sakuya or Youmu for instance. You also have standard spellcards' things: lasers, micrododging, unfocused dodging, some spellcards are puzzle-like; later levels tend to challange you in multiple ways. The way taking photos work means that you will be pushed to approach boss, even more so if you want a decent score, so no bottom-hugging. While I said that learning patterns is easier, executing them feels harder then in mainline title. Especially later levels will demand almost-perfect playing, if only for a short while.
To summarise somewhat: it is less about consistent 'good enough' across multiple stages and bosses, and more about perfecting a single spellcard and then moving to another. The gameplay loop is changed to make it easier, while the difficulty is increased to compensate. I personally like it, but it might be tengu-bias at work here.

Seeing how Hatate's newspaper likes to criticize Tengu society, she'd probably be interested in sociology from the outside world. If I made some shallow critic of the outside world while using as much pseudo intelectual babble as possible, she'd probably be so impressed that she'd ask for a guest column in her paper.

About Hatate's theory of social relations, she's based it on facts. Just because she didn't go visit the village doesn't mean she can't check on the situation of Gensokyo using thoughtography. A sociologist will never be able to capture the entirety of the social processes that define communal living; berating them for not studying in the field things that aren't interesting or that they can get information on from books/digital resources would be ridiculous. Hatate has some sort of experience in Tengu society that allows her to see that there's a problem (something Aya agrees on!), but unlike Aya she doesn't see it as just a slight on herself. Actually, Aya only sees the injustices of tengu society because they're affecting her personally. Of course, the fact that brings awareness to the inequalities is hardly important; what matters is how you deal with it. And Aya completely misses the point by hyperfocusing on the injustice of her missing out on promotions. She never questions why tengu society must be so hierarchical and structured; she only ever complains about how she's not on the top pole. On the other hand, Hatate sees the inequalities for what they are, symptoms of contradictions in society. It's not impossible that Aya could eventually come to understand this; indeed, I think Hatate only accepted Aya's invite to appear in AFiEU (a tabloid in which Aya insulted Hatate with vile fake news, by the way) because she thought that Aya's resolve to challenge the structures of tengu society was genuine enough. And yet Aya was completely unable to publish it; now, that can be excused due to what happened. But what's completely inexcusable is her cowardice during the red snow incident. That alone shows what Aya's character is.
Also, you trying to frame Hatate's friendship with the lower classes as somehow a bad thing is pathetic. She's never preached to anyone; she only gathers like-minded people, and she knows that the lower classes often have internal conscience of the inequalities in a way that intellectuals don't often appreciate. She never positions herself as leader of a revolution; rather, she works in camaraderie with everyone who wants fairness in the Mountain.
