Got another smart doll. I didn't want to buy more of them because of Dannys antics but I couldn't stop myself, those semi-real faces they've been doing lately are just way too cute.
Spent all day yesterday sewing an outfit for her, I legit had a "wait, why is it dark outside?" moment.

>>47206754
Don't fret anon. Even if things are custom, you can probably find the original creator. I don't quite recognize this sculpt (it's on the tip of my tongue I swear) but that bust is probably a peach pai. Custom hands can be found all over, but yahoo japan auctions and booth are probably your best bet for ease of access (and keep an eye on mandarake, I've found them there from time to time.) The wig is a bit of a tricky color, but look around and you'll find something, Licht might have a similar option available. You might not be able to make an exact copy, but you can definitely get close. Good luck!

I've met Danny on two separate occasions almost a decade apart and he was always as much of a prick in person as he seems to be online. Add in that the "Why a SmartDoll might not be for you" page is practically the HK "You suck and we hate you" copypasta, and that's all I needed to never buy one.

I'm thinking about doing one of those 100 day challenges for my doll photography to get better at it. Only problem is I don't think I can come up with 100 unique poses and compositions in such a short time span, especially without the practice of doing it all the time. So question for the photographers here, how do you come up with your poses? Do you come up with them on your own or do you get inspiration from pose books, social media, etc?

As someone who routinely plonks my dolls down on concrete and in mulch to take a photo, I'd still go with dollbot. I haven't handled on, but I have handled the original imomodoll body, and while their 75cm boys are incredibly solid, the first iteration of their 40cm body might be the worst one I've ever handled. It will not hold together. I have the entire frame- the ENTIRE internal skeleton- held together with tape because it cannot handle movement. Not even posing, just the rigors of putting on pants.

I will eventually get one of their upgraded bodies. Thee 75cm boys are, again, incredibly solid! So that gives me confidence that they are making improvements. But for something you intend to be traveling with, I'd recommend Dollfie Dream (easiest to replace parts, poses well, sturdy,) > Obitsu (affordable, the bodies have improved a lot over the years, also easy to replace parts) > Angel Philia (they are easily the best posers as far as vinyl goes, but they are a bit delicate and parts can be troublesome,) > Azone (they are lovely but harder to dress and find option parts for,) > Smart Doll (they don't pose the best and getting parts is a pain in the ass, but they hold up to being toted around in a backpack wonderfully these days,) other vinyl brands (which can be great but even I haven't handled all of them.) Anyone who disagrees, please feel free to offer your own perspective!

>> No.47229489

>>47226573
They don't take routine handling very well, mine loses its lower legs all the time. As a modding test bed? It is the cheapest option, and if you have the skill to create/print solutions to the Imomo's bigger flaws*, then by all means.

*That being there's zero integration of the inner frame and vinyl shell. The legs especially just wobble around, giving a very janky feeling.

>> No.47231187

To anyone that needs to hear it, it's ok to not do anything with your dolls for a while. It's okay if that interest and passion wanes. Life is cyclical and sometimes other things -- sometimes good, sometimes bad -- will take precedence. Dolls are ever-patient and watchful. They see what you are going through. They will wait for you. Be as kind to yourself as they would be, anons. And when you do feel the spark again, embrace it and share here. This thread, too, shall be waiting.

I’m thinking about those cheap knockoff hard plastic Dream fairy dolls that are 40cm full set for about $51 on AliExpress. has anyone seen what these dolls look like when disassembled? I think I have a torso that would work great replacing the legs at the rotational thigh joint.

Any doll in the 400-800 range is moot because there are purpose made doll brands that already have the function and look im after. (Mozu doll, nsfw)

>>47228914
I’m being vague for a reason. I would be posting to the ona thread but I wanted info on newer bjd then they know about.

>>47229059
You can buy a new frame for 22 bucks on AliExpress.

How is the quality of the vinyl parts on your imomodoll? I guess that’s all I’m after really. Having some loose joints would be okay so long as the limbs are not falling off.

>>47229489
Yeah I do 3D printing and I’m considering just using one of the STL BJD models already available but vyinl is a nicer feeling material then any of the resins I have. And I would need to paint the resins even if I used the flexible stuff.

The last mod to a hard doll I did was a “play date Rapunzel” I think about 80cm tall, I want something smaller to be a fairy, normally I mod fabric dolls.

1) nah, they fit DD clothes because they're basically plastic/silicone-hybrid bootleg DDs
2) If Six House is too small, I believe Irokebijin has 90cm dolls for the purpose you're seeking.
3) American Girl (and other 18" dolls) are FAR wider and chunkier than basically any 40cm doll because they (and their clothes/accessories) are made for the clumsy hands of a child to play with. 18" clothes are too big for 60cm dolls, they are more than 2x the width of any 60cm doll. You are overestimating the size of these dolls.
4) The vinyl is alright but prone to stains even by vinyl standards.

If you are set on Imomodoll for the price, bon mot -- but candidly anon, you are not going to be able to get even the average anon penis into a 40cm doll and even when you do, it's not going to be a pleasant feeling. If you are modding to make a DIY Dollho-esque creation using coat hangers and a mini onahole torso like the Lolinco, then this might be a more feasible route to choose.

I hear the premade 40cm sex dolls are all kinda garbage for sex but I have two torsos that are the right size and measurements for 40 cm dolls. One is a toys heart fairy and the other is a generic torso that cost about $12 on Amazon but look and feel fantastic. That is why I want to Frankenstein something of my own I have good holes and torsos, just want a cute title fairy face and limbs complete the package.

Currently I stuff them inside of fabric dolls but these BJD’s are cute in a way those will never be.

Maybe a strategy would be to use a volks fabric body suit and let the parts sort of ragdoll inside of that. The fabric skin would keep it all together and flex.

How durable do you think the volks bodysuits are? They are cheap enough that I wouldn’t feel too bad if they don’t hold up too long.

Im barely following what youre talking about but my one volks suit at the neckline ripped just putting it on. No issues on my other one. Degens need degens advice so I'll chime in with my experience.

[spoiler[
If you are dead set on a vinyl BJD for this, do not go do anything less than 58-60cm. As mentioned by >>47231578 40cm is far to small to fit into, even with a modded ona. It s also to small and doesn't have enough surface area for the average to comfortably fit *on*, if that is your plan of attack. A 1/3 scale has far more surface area and volume to fit right and is a far more pleasurable experience. Take the time to save the money to not cheap out on something that won't be the right thing.

>purpose made doll brands that already have the function and look im after
This will always always always be the better way to go for your own satisfaction. You already know about mozu, they make exactly the thing you want in a small size for less than 500. If you want bigger than that, Irokebijin makes 90cm TPE dolls for not too much more as previously mentioned. Again, take the time to save the money for the thing you will be more happy with.

>I’m being vague for a reason
I knew that. I hoped I would be the only one degenerate enough to do this.

>vyinl is a nicer feeling material
Yes, this is true, but silicone and TPE feel better. Don't use lubes on vinyl, it stains worse than you do.

Learn from my mistakes so you don't make them, too.

I think doll parts+ ona torso + doll skin suit is a combo I haven’t seen tried. Removing the need for rigid skeleton in the torso would hopefully maintain the comfort of using the torsos I currently have.

If you mean second hand silicone dolls, don't. Any potential savings isn't worth catching a case of whatever is growing inside it. If you mean vinyl, ebay and mandarake? Facebook and discord groups?

If you're going to go as far as spending money to indulge these desires, at least get yourself something nice instead of doing a fucked up hackjob.

Are there any shops you guys know of that specialize in professional/military outfits? I'm all for dressing your dolls in a way that's cute/trendy, and that in such a niche market people will gravitate to making what they know sells, but I feel like there might be a gap in the market here.

This is the full set doll that’s only 51 bucks on AliExpress right now. It’s a hard plastic knock off of the cute 40cm dolls on the market. Anyone try one of these out before? The reviews on YouTube are from toy doll/non BJD folks. Looks like something I wouldn’t feel too bad if I messed it up.

I've seen owner photos, they're constructed like and made of the material of those baby dolls you can get in the walmart toy aisle. If you haven't even seen what they're ripping off you might not notice but no, I would say they're not worth that. Spend a little tiny bit more and get an imomodoll fullset if you're on a budget, I know anons here have been negative about them but that's in comparison to MDDs and dollbot, which are 4x the price or more. I have one of their first gen 1/6 and she's perfectly lovely, I imagine their newer bodies are sturdier. Is there any guides on how to make hair drills for dolls?

Assuming that you can't find a wig that's exactly what you're looking for, you don't really need a doll-specific guide since you can style heat-resistant wigs like normal hair, as long as you don't do it too often. Definitely take it off the doll and use a wig stand though to avoid scorching your doll's face.

I think Jane's dollland has some video reviews or at least unboxings of some fullsets, I personally have one of their 1/4 and one of the 1/6 dolls and they feel very high quality and sturdy. They're solid PVC with a surface coating and embedded joints, so they're very heavy compared to other dolls of the same sizes. The face prints are very pretty and their clothes are lovely. Most fullsets don't include shoes, my 1/4 did but check the fullset description in case you need to buy some separately. For the 1/4, the knees bend about 90 degrees, the arms can do full 180 degrees but ONLY if you pull out the hidden second joint which is recessed in the upper arm (I would suggest doing this before you dress the doll right away, and warming up the arm with a hair dryer to soften the plastic first). The hip joint is also about 90 degrees of motion at full bend. Shoulders are free motion pretty much. I should mention that the second 1/4 body, MACOCO, is constructed slightly differently from the one I have but it's had good reviews too. The upper torso of all bodies is hollow to facilitate a chest joint. I would not suggest trying to pull out any joints except the for extending the hidden arm joint.
For their 1/6 bodies the double elbow joint is visible from the start and requires no pulling. Range of motion is 90 for knees and hips again. Also very sturdy.

Look into boil washing doll hair into curls! Just make sure you're using a wig that's made of heat resistant fibre like the other anon said. Do not, the risks outweigh the benefits.
A decent amount of perfumes contain trace amounts of stuff that various plastics and vinyl don't like, such as acetone. Which incidentally, as you may know, can ruin your faceups. It can be pretty bad for your body too, but unless you swim in the stuff, you'll be fine, you regenerate, your doll won't.
My recommendation is to use scented embossing powder on a piece of cardstock folded over or to squirt a cotton ball and leave it in a bag with a piece of paper. Then just stuff it somewhere on your doll you won't mind. Be warned, the powder can be flaky if you do it wrong. If you absolutely must, I think the best option would be to spray the outside of clothes, but I won't condone that because I don't know whether it'll do anything bad. Not that I've tried any of these myself, but I know enough about fragrances to know it's a risky business. Aerosolized compounds touching the doll is also not great, but it's way better than direct contact.

Actually, there are differences between the SL8 and SL9SD visually. You'd have to look for them though. Namely, the SL8 has many variants that vary in design depending on where it was exported to.

I apologize in advance for the following autism:
As someone who started with Gen One and is a certified Hoennbaby, this is the correct take. Game Freak haven't made a truly good game in fifteen years and the closest they've gotten was Legends: Arceus. Not even because it was particularly amazing, but mostly for the fact that it was at least fun to play as as game, unlike Sword and Shield. Scarlet and Violet are... better than Sword and Shield, but they have their own problems. Pokemon is always at its best when it's in any other company's hands -- Genius Sonority in particular -- and that has never been more true than now. At this point, fangames and romhacks are the best Pokemon experiences available. Pokemon Gaia is the closest thing I've played to a Pokemon game in a long times, Drayano's hacks keep the old games feeling fresh, and crazy things like Infinite Fusion are always a treat. We're finally getting some decent alternative creature collectors too -- Moonstone Island, Cassette Beasts, Palworld, along with the usual suspects (SMT and Digimon.) Nothing scratches that itch the same way, but any port in a storm... I wish I could stop caring about this franchise. I have a life-sized Larvesta on pre-order. We can only hope that at some point the 1000 monkeys working at Game Freak accidentally shit out a good game again.

I also started with Gen One and I agree. Shit has gone so far downhill in so many ways it's not funny, and the stuff they do to try and keep it fresh is just lame gimmicks. I remember liking Gold/Silver when they came out, but I don't think I would enjoy them as much anymore - my attempts to replay the old games have made me more aware of their flaws than I was when I originally played them.
Anyways, a doll.

Unironically try the romhacks Pokemon Brown and Pokemon Prism, they're GSC-era hacks but they do a hell of a lot with that template. A lot of garbage would arise if this happened, but I still am of the opinion that it would be a net positive if Pokemon, whole franchise, had licensing as free and clear as Hatsune Miku's. It sure as hell couldn't be any worse, and at least then fans wouldn't risk getting banished to the shadow realm for the crime of transformative works.

I think what's most frustrating is that Pokemon is the single highest-grossing media franchise on the planet -- including shit like Sanrio and Disney -- and so they absolutely, unequivocally have the resources to make something which is at the least decent. They frankly have the resources to make a fully immersive VR MMORPG with Morrowind-tier depth and haptic feedback so we can feel it when we throw Pokeballs or pet a Pokemon on the head, but instead we get switch games optimized like they're bundled with a bitcoin miner. Any skills they lack (and they lack so many) they could easily hire for, en masse, literally anyone would want that shit on their resume. It's a known fact that part of the reason the games have gone so far down the shitter is because Game Freak doesn't have the time to actually finish their titles due to the need to meet merch release deadlines, which are frequently negotiated years in advance -- but if time is a factor, spreading out that work over more people is the answer, and Game Freak of all companies is uniquely in the position to be able to throw money at that problem until it ceases to plague them. They could recruit internally through Nintendo for the best of the best to fulfill literally any role (god rest Satoru Iwata's soul, people don't realize just how much he did to make Pokemon playable.) Game Freak cannot deliver on the bare minimum, yet they have the resources to reinvent the wheel. It drives me nuts.

Anyway, I always love seeing you post your girl here! I love the color of that dress, it really contrasts nicely with her hair. I forget, what model is she again, anon?

From reading online I've gathered wide tooth seamless combs for detangling (starting from the bottom as one would with real hair) and metal fine tooth for smoothing are best practices. Also, using hair clips to work in sections, lowest to highest. Hoping to avoid or minimize any potential damage, so any advice would be wonderful.

cosplay wig repair tutorials might be helpful (iirc fabric softener sometimes helps), but you have to be careful with synthetic fibers. if they get stretched/distorted, sometimes there’s no going back. preventing damage like you mentioned is going to be your best bet when possible. personally i’m a big fan of the mini tangle teaser brushes. metal combs can be too rigid if you accidentally comb too hard, so bristles with some flex can help minimize damage.

If anyone's overwhelmed with camera talk, the most important thing to remember is this:

The best camera for photography is the one you already have. If you're just starting out, better gear won't give you better photos (and in fact might be worse in the case of fiddly high-end gear.) The first "real" camera I ever had access to was my Nintendo DSi -- and I learned a lot working with what that limited system had to offer. If you want somewhere to start, whatever is currently available at your local big box store is more than fine to learn on -- or look around online for something a few generations older and cheaper! Busy yourself worrying about everything else later on... right now your main goal is to familiarize yourself not just with how to use a camera, but with the kind of photos YOU want to take. Once you develop a personal style and discover how you personally enjoy approaching photography... then you can start dialing down on the gear which will help to make those dreams a reality.

For now, just grab, go, and shoot. Have fun, don't sweat the mistakes you make along the way, and come back now and then to show us what you've done!

It's very true though. We can all look at photos online and admire them, but when you go to take your own, that creative process may lead somewhere entirely different than you anticipated. I feel that, in the beginning, the best way to learn really is to run around and photograph whatever catches your eye. Play with framing and camera angles and where your subject is positioned and you will start to develop a sense for composition. Turn the camera on manual mode and figure out how all the settings work, and you will grow in your ability to set the 'mood' of the photo, or compensate for difficult shooting conditions. And most of all, take lots and lots of bad photos, then be nice to yourself when you review them after the fact. If I can promise anything at all about the photography side of the hobby, it's that the only true way to take good photos... is by taking a lot of bad ones along the way. Even now I still make mistakes. Permit yourself the opportunity to be imperfect and you will grow so much further than if you let the need for perfection paralyze you.

Sometimes the photography session is frenetic and results in 200 blurry photos of a jumping spider (but one of them is good!!!) you chased across the yard, other times it is methodical and carefully framed, taking the time to set up the shot, pose everything, and position it all just-right -- which gives you time to reflect not only on the artistic process of making something with your very own hands, but to exist in the moment. Take in the breeze, feel the sun warm your skin -- or really enjoy the softness of the rug you're sitting on, the familiarity of wherever you call home. Enjoy the moment... and as you do, you'll take some good photos in your own time. And as you keep doing that, you'll learn what it means, to you, to express that unique creative spirit which you personally possess. And I can personally say that I look forward to seeing the results of those efforts, anons!

(And to those who aren't interested in the photo side of the hobby, that's okay too. Dressing up your dolls, making things for them, even the way you set them on a shelf and pose them to look at in your home -- those are all their own expression of creativity, too. There's no one right way to go about any of this!)

Industrial doll

>> No.47307667

>>47304164
My opinion on this is:
If you want to take good photos, the most important thing you can do is get good lighting. Your phone camera will do fine for most photos you want to take, provided that you give it good lighting.
The second most important thing you can do is just use a tripod. This isn't necessarily the case for photographing non-dolls; you can most often get away with or be forced into using increased shutter speed and/or ISO speed. But because we are taking photos of still subjects, getting a tripod will allow you a much better image even (or rather especially) with your phone camera than handheld in 95% of cases.
And with this hobby, gearfaggotry means that you'd be spending your disposable income on camera stuff instead of clothes, which would upset your doll. Avoid upsetting your doll.

I have fabric mod podge coming and gonna try it to see how it seals the thread and if it stays flexible. I have a sacrificial hand with thread tied to it to see if/how it stains too. Don't know if I'm missing an obvious alternative or not for the threads around her mouth, besides painting them on. The thread being actual thread and the ability to change the color is too enticing.

I'd flip that and say tripod is more important, then lighting
because this is dolls, you can get good shots as long as the camera isn't moving
then again I have way more money in camera gear than dolls lol (I shoot more than dolls)

Yes, thread can stain but it varies depending on the manufacturer. When I started sewing i got a set of Gütermann all-purpose thread as those were reccomended in most sewing guides and all the dark colors stain to some degree with black being the worst. Meanwhile the anthracite thread from some cheap no-name brand I picked up at a local supermarket doesn't stain at all.

new here, if I just want a good-looking head (or entire doll-set event) without having to wait 4 weeks for a face-up commission, what's my best option to just order something that's in stock somewhere? Don't care if that makes it more expensive

>> No.47316707

>>47316468
You can get a full basic set from Volks or Parabox with a decent face-up and Parabox has several machine-painted heads in stock. You can also look on the secondhand market, but I have to ask, why the rush? In my opinion, you're better off waiting a bit to get what you really want instead of settling for what's available.

>> No.47317068

>>47316468
If you want something special I would say that waiting 4 weeks isn't particularly long especially in a hobby where most items are made to order and take months to ship anyway. If you're incapable of waiting there are ready-painted ooak heads on yahoo japan auctions but be prepared for the prices to be unstable.

I have been thinking of getting a bjd, but I have some wig questions.
Is there a way to straighten wavy/curly hair without a hairstraightener?
Are household scissors good enough to cut the hair or would it look like crap?
I like bobcuts with the nape shaved, would shaving that part of the wig to the scalp look realistic?

>> No.47328421

>>47328202
>nape shaved
you'll most likely need to replicate that with paint. wig caps to my knowledge aren't clear or dense enough to appear as stubble. you could shift the cap towards the forehead to reveal more of the nape and style accordingly.
you want sharp, quality pair of scissors as their hair is often thicker than ours. the style you describe seems in part rely on crisp, neat, composed ends and edges, which a regular scissors would fray and appear less even. some small hair clips to work in portions and a rat tail comb for accurate sectioning may help as well.

>> No.47328445

>>47328202
If you want it straight I would just get a straight wig. Theres a couple different materials they can be but Im not well versed in the materials and their properties aside from some you can use heat and others you’ll melt the hair.
I used little grooming scissors when I cut my one wig. As ling as they’re sufficiently sharp it should be fine.
The wig is usually on a base cap of some kind so if you shave the hair you’ll still have the base of the wig. I would buy two wigs and see if you like the look.

Nah, I prefer discussions here. The community is small but at least we engage with each other. I tried social media for other things but it's just posting into the void for the most part. I can't make myself care about it when the only interaction you get is likes and follows. I may set up a twitter account at some point so that I can follow JP accounts and other hobbyists, but the website is so irredeemably shit right now with how promotional content is handled. It's basically to the point where if I see anything in English, I know without reading that I can block or hide it.
