If you want to keep paying devkit/flamer taxes and have to modernize the ship every time you need a different form, by all means. I prefer to invest a bit more and have an alternate form to never have to touch again.
A bunch of ships drop gear that you'll definitely need to at least level them to Kai for, like Mikuma and her 20.3cm (3) guns. Choukai is your stable source of T22 Kai 4 radars, but that requires a blueprint tithe - still much less than it would cost to boost a T22 to Kai 4. Leveling Yuubari to 25 and Kai gives you a 14cm Twin Gun, which you'll need many of for upgrading 14cm Twin Kai Ni.
Other than that, just make plans about what you need to upgrade and take note of what fodder they need and from which ships you can get it.

I thought about this but I'm still early game (doing 2-4 right now) and already hitting the ship limit quite often having locked only unique ones for the most part. So I thought (or hoped) that there's probably one form that's only used occasionally or depending on player preferences and that only a few ones might be worth considering sacrificing a spot.

It's for players clearing events on full hard/medium. I have several spare oois and kitakamis for example. And RTA gigachads usually have several accounts full of dupe yamatos, fletchers and yahagis.
But yeah getting some equips from girls are much cheaper than trying to actually build it. I level my second Amatsukaze K2 to get two +7 engines. I level each abukuma I find for 25mm triple and cheap radar. When you get a boat you don't recognise always check her kai equips and ask yourself "do I need them for some weird quest/equip upgrades?

Its more useful for people who play the gacha games on DMM, they hand out their gacha tickets as rewards.
There's also a 10yen campaign for their various gachas, and a coupon campaign coming up.

Getting a ton of free points is rare now.
Although there was a good campaign last year that awarded 2000.
