She was fresh voice who stormed Japanese pop music at the very end of 90s. She made three utterly fantastic albums - Muzai Moratorium, Shouso Strip and Kalk Samen Kuri-no-Hana which went from rock pop to avantgarde pop. After that she founded Tokyo Jihen - pop rock band with some catchy killer tunes but as things went on the band became less and less exciting (first two albums are pretty great, though) and after some years she came back to her solo career full-time but it just wasn't really the same. Some people like album Sanmon Gossip while others don't but it seems to be the point of division for many. For years now her albums have been mostly "single collections" as they contain like only one or two original songs and so on.

There's also that thing with her general and political views on things… simply put she isn't really person young people nowadays would be interested in opinion-wise.

Unrelated but I'm looking forward to YUKI's new album next week. Also LOSTAGE should begin selling theit new album from last year in their online shop sometime this month so I'm extremely looking forward to that.

My absolute favourite band is Judy and Mary, I think YUKI had a lot of help with the other band members and lyrics writer(s). Her solo stuff is okay from what I've listened to, but Judy and Mary is impossible to beat in my mind. I've been listening to them for the past couple of years, and I've yet to be bored of them.

I've translated a few of their songs, and it really opened my eyes up to just how utterly clueless a lot of so-called 'translators' are, in any field. I used to think Japanese music lyrics were sort of nonsensical from reading 'professional' quality translations, but it turns out people just put stuff into Google Translate and copy-paste whatever it shits out. Their lyrics are good, turns out most people on the Internet can't understand the language for shit.

YUKI was lyricist, composers were mainly Onda and TAKUYA as anon says. The story od JAM is pretty interesting since it started as a way to push YUKI for solo career which Onda wanted to do but YUKI was adamant that she wants to be in a band, that's how JAM came to be.

In the initial phase Onda was the lead creative force of the band serving as the leader and primary composer. First three albums are almost all his songs. But then the power balance within the group began to shift a bit as MIRACLE DIVING and THE POWER SOURCE albums saw Onda and TAKUYA both composing comparable amount of songs. Also more and more singles were TAKUYA's songs. And then with POP LIFE album it was almost all TAKUYA. And then came WARP, the ultimate JUDY AND MARY masterpiece album which saw TAKUYA fully at the helm with only one song being composed by Igarashi (drummer). It saw the band at its most experimental and was a closure for them.

ZAZEN BOYS new album was great although is a slightly different way than their previous releases. But what takes the cake so far this year is 天国注射 and their first full length album 春彦. Fantastic raw punk with just the right balance between urgency and tongue in cheek lyrics. Definitely a recommendation.
