This, Linux is a workhorse and should stay that, I hate programing C and shit in windows. I'm used to good old GCC. And thats why I like linux on the college computers.

Win 7 is what I use at home since it's easy, robust, plays games and runs all the software you'll need. It also pretty much auto detects anything form my Mobile phone, camera, everything.

.rar for packing, .zip for programming since I've never found a good code example of unraring files in a smart way. (I did figure out how to unrar it all to a temp folder, but if you don't exit correctly you'd still have that temp folder lying around taking space)

I use WinRAR to extract .rar and .zip, and I use 7-Zip to extract .7z and any .rar or .zip that has Japanese character and won't extract for whatever reason. 7-Zip extracts everything for me 100%, but takes 3 times as long, so I have both on my computer.

what's wrong with ubuntu? you can still hack it to make it do pretty much anything you want it to do. for example take a look at crunchbang linux. besides dependencies hell, linux is fine for me. and doing shit in command line is actually not bad at all. unlike some people i grew up on dos (not windows)

Windows users (aka children), how's it feel to know there's an entire group of individuals who are better at computers than you are? Meet GNU/Linux users. They are better than you.

They understand the hardware better, they understand the basic principles of computer science better, they know how networks work better than you. They understand the pros and cons of filesystems (including ntfs) because on linux, you get to choose FS's; they understand the principles behind operating system design because they run into phrases like "microkernel" and "monolithic kernels"; they can probably program, too, since learning a scripting language vastly improves productivity on linux (and this really pisses you off, since programming was one thing you always failed at on windows.) Oh, and they probably know windows better than you, since most advanced linux users these days are ex-windows users who managed to learn linux years ago, when it was much less user friendly.

At this point, a confident individual would admit to himself he has a lot to learn about linux and computers in general. But since you lack the self esteem to do that, you run back to windows, install farcry (or whatever) and keep repeating to yourself "at least I can run games. at least I can run games."

If you're looking for a job, all this hits you even harder, because you realize a lot of the jobs require linux in one way or another. Even many of the windows related jobs recommend linux! At this point, you rationalize "well the only thing I know is windows, so I must be a windows expert!" as if knowing only one thing makes you an automatic expert, or that learning linux forces you to forget windows entirely.

I already know Windows users will reply "troll" "0/10" etc because they have no argument.

i don't think it's true a lot of jobs require linux. just take a look at the statistics on what % of firms use windows. probably the only place you'd use linux is within the field of scientific computing (which is the field i work in). you'll be working with large clusters and doing a lot of shit in fortran. scripting would likely be in R or maybe SciPy or Octave. a lot of people in industry - for instance web developers - use windows. linux is for scientists and academics mostly when performance really matters and you're not coding shit for other people to use but for research.

before spam filters, you could script a naive bayes filter. if you want to modify a large number of files in a certain way, you'd want a script to do that. heck i've used vb / vba and bat scripts in windows to make my life easier. why wouldn't you want to program to make your life easier regardless of OS is beyond me ...

For doujinshi and most other already compressed files it doesn't really make a difference. In fact, zip is superior in those cases unless you disable solid compression for rar/7z.
If you leave it on reading them will be much slower unless you extract them beforehand.
