It wouldn't surprise me if there's been an influx of young fans with how popular fumos were as a meme and the popularity of akatsuki records

I think generally it's hard to get a grasp on how many new fans there is because most new fans nucleate in discord servers now

the new western "fans" on youtube/twitter/discord dont care about the games, only le funny fumo memes and shit, maybe they'll pretend to actually do if an eceleb nigger tells them to or you call them out

a poll from Nikkei Entertainment in december of 2023 that got ~50k responses shows that touhou is popular with young people. i also remember seeing a small poll from a reitaisai that showed there was a lot of young first time attendees too.

that said secondary fans arent really a new thing, they just outnumber primary fans massively now

Found this while looking through popularity poll data. A reddit graph, but shows older participants decline and fluctuate since 2010 while <20 remains pretty stable.

I remember lurking on Twitter and there was this one thread about a female english teacher getting called out by japanese elementary schoolers because she has Mokou keychain on her backpack. Apparently touhou is really popular with little girls around that age because pretty cute girls.

Weren't there not one, but several Touhou fanart contests for kids? As in, 6-10 year olds? And if you take part in that sort of activities as a child, there are chances you'll keep enjoying it as a teen and adult.
Also, I scored a Touhou themed book at a con, and it looks like a drawing/coloring book for kids. I mean, the kanji are even "subtitled" in hiragana.
