For beginners
Everything you need to know about tenhou itself can be found here http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Explanations for the tiles, rules, scoring etc can be found here:
http://www.reachmahjong.com/

Games to test your Knowledge:
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/yaku.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/bamboo/bamboo.html

Hand Calculator: http://no-info.no-ip.info:6224/mj/mahjong.html

Please read 2-5 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 5 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask

Heh, and I'm the type of guy who would go for a toi-toi even with a suu ankou in hand.

Also, just out of curiosity, how long does it usually take for you to discard a tile, since I'm usually playing on actual tabletop some of the players can take surprisingly long before settling for a tile. Do you manage to pick one while the others are thinking or?

>> No.4681800

>>4681754
Between 2 and 3 seconds. When you draw a tile, you immediately now if you need it or not. If you don't, you discard it. If you need it, you already know what are the tiles bothering you in your hand, so it shouldn't take long to make your choice.

If im doing really bad and I have an absolout garbage starting hand I take long on purpose before discarding only middle tiles, to make it look like im going for some kind of yakuman. After a bit I discard anytile I draw to make it look like I am in tenpai. Hopefully this will scare people enough to fold hands, giving me a better chance to make up the deficit next round, with a starting hand that could lead into big points.

The only "kind of yakuman" you could get, discarding only middle tiles would be Kokushi Musou, and seeing your first 2 discards being middle tiles, any decent players will hastingly discard all of his terminals honors. If all the players do that (which would be normal), at some point there would be a kabe of a terminal or a honor, destroying your strategy in the blink of an eye.

Yeah, because no winds/honors terminals will be discarded at all during the first 10 turns, and everyone will think all the winds/honor terminals are in your hand. Wow, sounds like a perfect plan. Except not. That could only work with Kokushimusou, it would be easy as hell to tell that your hand isn't full of concealed triplets as long as there are visible pairs of honors or terminals. And that will definitely happen. You can only hide 13 tiles from everyone.
