Crushing Surge: Invigorating keyword.

"If you are trained in Endurance, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier when you hit with a power that has the invigorating keyword. No invigorating power grants temporary hit points more than once during a turn, even if you hit more than once with that power."

Disheartening Strike: Rattling keyword.

"If you are trained in Intimidate and deal damage with a power that has the rattling keyword, the target takes a –2 penalty to attack rolls until the end of your next turn. A creature that is immune to fear is not subject to this penalty."

26-50 Rapeseed of Raping: If a character swallows this seed, they will attempt to rape the next member of the opposite sex in sight regardless of age.
1-50 Jar of Jacking Off: Whenever a male opens this jar, they must pass a Drive sub-ability check at TH 80 or be compelled to force their fuckstick into the jar. Once inside, the jar will inexplicably grip it firmly and jerk it to completion, even against the will of the opener. Upon completion, the cummer must roll percentile dice. If the results are 01-10, then the jar becomes pregnant. If the jar is pregnant, it will not allow itself to be opened, but will care for the fetus within, which will be heard screaming by others within 1d100 feet day and night. After 9 months of fetal torture, the child will be born and the jar will break.

If the jar is broken during its pregnancy, then the dying and twitching fetus will explode after 1d6 rounds of twitching. The explosion will cause 1d4 Life Points of sonic damage to all within 1d4 miles. Baby parts are inexplicably everywhere.

When born, the baby will be Unethical Immoral, will serve the father loyally, will obsessively collect jars, and seem to be male but have no penis, but oversized testicles, which can never ejaculate. Therefore, this child will be forever frustrated. Any child of a jar will insist that others call them “Chucky.”

For some reason, anakim are also the only monstrous race to not have Bodily Attractiveness or Facial penalties. Despite that they also have to roll d10 weird physical traits on a d100 table. Hmmm...

09: The anakim has cat-like eyes. The character loses d8 Facial Charisma since the eyes are so large and round..

18: The anakim has the legs of a goat.

24: The anakim has the odor of rotting flesh extend one foot away from their body.

25: The anakim has eyes that are permanently bloodshot.

54: The anakim has gils on the side of their neck, allowing them to breathe underwater.

64: The anakim has a third eye in the middle of their forehead. Having three eyes improves Vision by 1d20 points. Since 50 Vision points is perfect Vision, these bonus points are applied in this direction.

66: The anakim is accompanied by an odor of feces which extends 1d6 feet from their body.

40: The anakim causes humans within one foot to desire anal sex according to their sexuality.

45: The anakim is cannibalistic. Eating vegetables will make this anakim nauseated.

Work more on your suspension of disbelief.
It's not like OLD monsters or new monsters are really well-thought out.
Take the titular beholder. A ROCK WITH EYES THAT HATES ALMOST EVERYTHING. With auto cast magic. Woo.
Or OWLBEARS. Which fucked what?
Take old monsters.
CHIMERA-WE MIXED THREE ANIMALS.
Or Trolls. MEAN GREAN HUMANOID BEASTIES THAT ARE MEAN, whooo.

DnD is not a solo game in the end. Making a party that can deal with shit well and having a GOOD DM that will make such encounters that you will need a good arrangement(apart from luck) to win is necessary.
A singular good build can be rendered meaningless far too easily.

Beholders and owlbears were made decades ago.

Game writers CAN avoid that nowadays if they put our minds to it.

And don't die when they are killed unless you use fire or acid. Or possibly magic, I don't remember if it deals fatal damage to them.

Actual abilities are a different issue(yes, you need Acid or Fire most of the time, excluding later FATAL spells and abilities) and that was a DnD addition. We talk about basic design.
>>4681571
I am still not sure what your problem is.
I do not see a specific issue 90% of all monster designs do not share.
It is unnatural shit that really does not make sense no matter what in the end.

That's because, for the vast majority of cases, a wizard did it. No, seriously; if I remember the owlbear description correctly, it's stated that they were most likely created by wizards of the past for use as guards or something.

>> No.4681624

Or for every livng shit, 'A DEITY did it'.
That's the point.
You think some of the actually COOL designs make 'sense'?
No. They just look cool and are strong opponents, and it is satisfactory to kick it's ass.

Well, considering how active the D&D deities tend to be in most worldsettings, it's perfectly acceptable. Hell, Tiamat actively creates/encourages the creation of draconic monstrosities, does she not?

What does it being a solo game or not have to do with anything I said?

It's just hard to design material (including decent characters) for a game that has such huge variations in amounts of damage and effects dealt. I mean, should a monster or a class be designed around say a TWF rogue's some 200-300 damage per round, or the wizard's ~90 or so direct damage spells? A monster can be a letdown if it just gets splatted by a team's abilities in the first round or if it takes 5 years to get rid of, after all. And that's not even getting into save or lose effects and buffs and metamagic and magic items.

It's like the creators simply threw random stuff into a pot without checking if some of that wasn't already rotten (or if some of it was even food to begin with). Trying to work within the 3e system sometimes seems like tearing down a house with a ball-peen hammer and building it up brick by brick since there's just so much wrong (or at least inefficient) with it.

also lol good dm

As for old monsters getting a free pass, people probably thought they were stupid back then (even if they liked them), and with time they just learned to accept them. And now it's a habit. It's just that the newbies get more flak for it because they're new (and also some may think they're forced or focus tested). Also money. Lots of money.

It has to do with everything actually.
No matter how BULLSHIT and NON-BALANCED you thin a certain tactic or built is, a counter is easily made.
And since the DM KNOWS the character, it is easily countered.
And even if we assume 'EVERY SINGLE MOSTER CANNOT HANDLE MY BUILD, DMs just have to throw you character classes enemies with minster supplements.
Now matter how 'unbalanced' you think shit is, the game can still be challenging.
And there are SO many exploits you do not just have 3 abused 'kits' all over.
And yes, GOOD DM.
Everything depends on him. No mater the game or the edition. If you actually have a decent campaign, be thankful to the guy.

Eh, 4e has its own issues, even if it's not quite the clusterfuck that 3e seemed to want to be.

And as dumb as it sounds, I kinda like how you have casters with their limited POINTZ system and the warriors with their stances and maneuvers and different mechanics. And you got the incarnum guys over there doing whatever the hell incarnum does. Not to mention the various other oddball classes that use their own crazy set of abilities.

Sure, a DM can do basically anything. Well, within reason. Such is the nature of a relationship.

But if you're going to put in effort just to bring the outlier character(s) remotely in line (and hopefully it's implemented better than an over the top "ALL YOUR ABILITIES ARE USELESS, TAKE THAT" kind of approach), it does sorta defeat the point of having (and supposedly paying for) these rulebooks in the first place. Y'know, convenience and a universally agreed upon system. Which is my point, that 3.5 is a giant mess of halfbaked rules, bad ideas, and holdovers that don't interact well or speedily in the slightest and take lots of work to fix.

Of course, because of that, it's somewhat fascinating as such, especially in comparison to the positively sterile 4th edition. 3.5 has by nature the capacity to model stuff you can't remotely accomplish with 4e's structure, but it's just really messy about doing so (and of course you might create something retarded like a Sarrukh or Astral Projection in the process).

>> No.4682309

>>4682252
Without the basic rules, you would have to create settings and agreements from teh start.Without the ruleset and specific builds and restrictions, your DM would have to build shit from scratch and you would negate everything he tries to enforce. So even a MESS is necessary and better than nothing. A good DM needs the material no matter what.
3.5 just with the core rules has so many builds and possibilities, it's not even funny.
Most of what people call 'half-baked ideas- or useless rules are usually shit that applies rarely in most campaigns (adventure from place to place and storm shit) and sometimes are not expanded much. But not really a bad design or useless afterthought.
