Some people use random/new nicknames, some don't. it's pretty easy to tell and usually the commentator would explain who they are at the start

For both scoring and survival, they have a system for comparing how difficulty survival / scoring is for each shot type, and this is used to assign TWC score to each run.
So if a player picks a shot that scores low in-game, they get more TWC score for their in-game score. It's usually based on the current world record for each shot, but I think they tweak it a bit if needed.
Survival score is based on how easy it is to LNN with a shot, which is probably a bit more subjective. The survival score is halved by each death / bomb.
Players have a set amount of time during which they can start runs. The player with the highest scoring run wins. The time limit varies by game and is usually based on how long a run takes.

I don't know most of these players, but it's always a lot of fun to watch. They don't let just anyone compete in the TWC, so even the relatively unknown players will be good.
The time-limited format makes things pretty volatile, so there is plenty of room for upsets, especially in the survival categories and in scoring runs where mistakes are very costly.

I care for gameplay but I just don't care about the players. Sure their skill is impressive, but it's like with any other game and same with streamers. Why watch someone play a game when you can just play it?

I still don't understand why survival mode doesn't have "meme run bonus point" to add more variety to the runs
For example, instead of the same old fashioned approach of playing it safe to achieve a low miss, players could attempt to clear UFO while also aiming for an LNN and scoring more than 2 billion points they could try Ichirin graze, whoever can graze it more than X numbers and not die will earn extra points, adding more risk to their play
There's already a point difference when playing with harder characters, so why not encourage risky play for styling too? After all, this tournament are for entertainment and fun, right?

There are a few things already in place. SA and TD have a full spell bonus to incentivize people against skipping Cat's Walk and Score Desire Eater, and GFW has rules to incentivize using the freeze as little as possible. Also, during the qualifiers this year for PCB, all three players got a Marisa B LNNN (on their first credits, no less), leading to a three-way tie with the highest possible TWCScore. So there's a decent chance you'll see something there. IIRC all players skipped the stage 5 midboss spell and used the power cancel strat, so it be something against those.
But otherwise, they don't have too many bonus points because

1) it's actually less entertaining. People watch survival because they WANT to see safe, reliable strats executed well, not players resetting because they died while milking Ringo or throwing away runs to get a good Meister cancel.

2) it would unnecessarily complicate the score calculation. What's worth more in UFO: a 2 miss that does every Ichirin graze perfectly, or 1 miss that doesn't score? What about IN: is Border Team 5 billion LNNFS or Alice LNNFS worth more?
Most survival categories also don't end with any LNNs, so it's not like players are starved for additional challenges.

If you want to see scoring, then just watch scoring.
