For the record, I'm interested in Japan, but have no interest in Visual Novels, Touhou, or 98% of the derivative anime out there; VN and Touhou, being outgrowths of anime otaku culture, are popular, I would assume, with those who already have cultivated an interest in anime and its semiotics. Hence, it's not too far-fetched to think that someone obsessed with VN/Touhou would also tend to be the sort of person obsessed with anime, and by extension, be inclined to spend money on anime-related merchandise.

While not being a VN- or Touhou-fag doesn't necessarily absolve me from being an anime-fag (hypothetically speaking), my not being an anime-fag more or less guarantees that I'm not a VN/Touhou-fag. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares -- it's that sort of thing syllogistic thing.
