Youkai thread? Well, one of the fellows I like is that one monk of which shrine had a close rival. When the other shrine was honored by the Emperor, the monk was so pissed that he turned himself into a demon rat and led a swarm of rodents to chew down the opposing shrine. Moral of the story? If your rival surpasses you, turn into a monster and eat him.

There's also that one monk who was so worried about evil overtaking his shrine after he died that he returned from grave as an oni (while often malicious, oni can also be divine agents or fierce protective spirits) and just kept protecting it.

Another fun guy is Taira no Masakado, to date the only ghost with a bank account (and he's richer than many of us to boot. ) Understandably angry after getting beheaded, his wayward head eventually ended up what is now Tokyo, where it is buried. Every time his shrine was under danger of being deconstructed, a great disaster befell Tokyo. The Japanese took their lesson and even gave the old Taira a bank account to appease his spirit. I have no idea whatever a disembodied head would do with that much money, though.

...Oh shit. Masakado with a cyborg body.

Yet another cool Taira was Taira no Kiyomori, who was once confronted with skulls of his slain enemies, clearly vengeful spirits there to extract revenge. He was quite unfazed and just stared them back, until the would-be vengeful ghosts vanished.

Here, I'll spoil Double Spoiler for you: Hatate leaves her room, confronts Aya, and it ends with Aya really pissed not even trying to take photos anymore. This gives Hatate the burst of self-confidence she needs to truly blossom, and we see the results in every picture commentary she makes.

The pro-Hatate view: Aya gets riled up and thus drops the camera duel and goes for a straight danmaku attack. Therefore Hatate defeated Aya, got her self-confidence boost, then went off to interview everyone herself. She gathered lots of material by going out and is now writing something l33t for the next Tengu Newspaper competition.

The pro-Aya view: after showing how superior her power level is to Hatate, she gets to listen to a newbie's misplaced priorities for writing articles. Thinking they'd be lulzy to read, she acts out the second half of the duel where she teaches Hatate how a true reporter should act while pretending to lose. As a "graduation test", she then puts away her own camera and lets Hatate have hands-on experience photo'ing real danmaku. Aya then stalks Hatate as she goes to make a fool out of herself both in gathering material and interpreting what she collected. As a bonus, this happens to be top-grade scandalous material she could use.
