In 1682, there was a big fire in Edo. A greengrocer's shop was also burned then. The greengrocer's family had stayed in the temple until their new house was rebuilt. The greengrocer's daughter Oshichi met Shonosuke who was a page of the temple, and she fell in love. After the new house was rebuilt, the greengrocer's family left from the temple, but Oshichi didn't forget Shonosuke. Oshichi set fire to her new house in 1683. She was arrested and was executed by burning. Oshichi is the most famous arsonist in Japan.

Oshichi

Oshichi's house was burnt down during the great fire in the Tenna Era.

She stayed at Danna-ji temple untile her family's new house was built.

Oshichi fell in love with Ikuta Shonosuke ( or Saemon )
, a temple page at Dannna-ji temple.

The next year, she went back to her new house.
So she attemped arson, thinking she could meet him again
if another fire occurred.

She was caught by the police

She was sixteen years old.
The magistrate knew it and asked her at the judgment,

'' You must be fifteen years old, aren't you? ''

Because boys and girls under fifteen years old
were not subject to the death penalty.

But she honestly stated her age and burnt at the stake
in Suzugamori for her crimes.
