It took much, much longer than that. On the bright side, I somehow did not completely destroy the original face up.

As for the results... I should have done this years ago. Even with this rough fitting, Murasaki looks so much better. Right now she's wearing 18mm eyes, the same size as the other Iris Collect I have, and it feels just a bit too small.

She never had eye sockets to start with, her eyes were originally printed on. I never really liked that aesthetic compared to swappable resin/plastic eyes. So I took the DIY route, partly to keep the original head and partly not wanting to spend more on a commissioned head with an eye mod.

Now that both eyes are in I feel like these 18mm are too small, either a bigger iris or a 20mm set.

I'm about to do add eye holes to a head, what did you use to make your initial holes? I get a dremel/xacto to shape it but did you just push your blade through and start taking material that way. Or did you work the blade in the center in a drilling motion and work outwards from there? I might be over thinking it with how many I'm doing.

>> No.46536705

>>46536417
I used a broad scalpel like blade and scored out a pentagon-like shape. The material was so think I needed to cut from behind to go all the way though. Probably could have used a small drill bit to make pilot holes, but vinyl is so soft anyway. After that it was shaving off tiny amounts of material -- less than 0.5mm usually, in short strips -- until I removed what I wanted. A thin pointed blade did the clean up and bevelling of the socket.

Personally don't care for painted on eyes so the lack of eyeholes on the head is a bummer to me. Dollmore has a 105cm and Parabox has a 110cm line(really ugly joints on those if you ask me). I know there's a few other resin dolls of similar size as well.

I asked a much more knowledgeable (and brave) friend of mine for help finding this article, but for the chemistry-inclined and those who have the right PPE, you can basically melt scrap vinyl into a slurry and make it into a putty to repair things. One thing I love about this hobby is that you can find so many skills I love converging in it while still being a play-oriented hobby which is everything I wanted. It's like I found my Mecca. I was drawn to model kits ay first but those are display only once you're done. I was fiddling with poses on my shelf yesterday and I got reminded why I switched to dolls. Kits fall apart so easily if you barely touch them. I would probably have stuck with plamo for the aesthetics but the fact they're meant to just put on a shelf was too unappealing. Alright that worked really well. I added some material back to where I did pilot holes to round out the eyes to more of the original oval plan.
My unit is Yihua 8786D, seems the lowest temp it goes to is 200 C which seems to be the sweet spot honestly. I didnt immediately melt anything and had to hold it a second on any material i added. Might be able to go a tad hotter but your movements would have to be faster I imagine. I only noticed burned vinyl that got left on the tip. Probably shouldn't have breathed it in. A fan at the least blowing any fumes out of your face might be useful and a wet sponge on the stand to keep burnt vinyl off the tip and the doll is a must. Tonight I dreamt I had a 1/12 scale doll but not one I owned. She was animated and I had a stylus that I could draw things for her to interact with (it worked like a Wacom pen, dream logic didn't seem to have a divide between digital and analog). I'd draw little paths in a garden and she skipped around, it was ultra cute. At some point I wrote down "You're cute!" on the ground and she said "I love you!" in a tiny voice and stretched her little arms toward me for a hug. I completely melted.

Can't you just stick the tail to the outside, or is the magnet not strong enough? That's what I do when I want the tail on the outside of the outfit, which is also how I prefer it with Yuzuki's miko outfit; but I attach it under the dress in her cafe maid outfit. Pic unrelated.

The problems I had with the magnets is they weren’t strong enough, the hot glue securing the one magnet fell off the body twice, and my stronger magnets are too large of a diameter. I think the tails are just really heavy. How do you do your magnets? When I tried just over clothes initially they just slid down due to the weight.

I have the magnet hot glued or blue-tacked inside the body. I actually failed to consider that your doll has two(?) tails, which will certainly make a huge difference. In fact, while my doll's single tail will stick to the outside of the clothes, the bond is actually very weak.

You really don't need to take a class to learn; just go through youtube and learn the basics of how to shoot in manual modes and when/why you may want to adjust aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and the basics of what focal lengths do. Then go shoot some things. If you want a book, I suggest 'understanding exposure'. Then just practice practice practice. I have no idea what I'm doing still but I think I've been improving. I see that a lot of resin dolls have blushed hands/bodies and it looks amazing, but is it worth it if you're gonna handle the doll a lot? Does it rub off unless you treat the doll as a display piece?

>> No.46592345

Eventually some of it will come off, especially around joints, just due to the friction of the parts moving -- that goes for vinyl or resin, or really anything. Other parts it will stick around for a long time, but blushing one of the more fragile things unfortunately.

>Resin BJD body can hit poses that are impossible for all but the very best 1/12 figures
>Doesn't even have a 3 part torso or any of the various posing gimmicks I've seen on other dolls
Amazing. Impldoll makes a body with really nice engineering and a neck joint, and it works flawlessly from what I've seen, but sadly I really hate their broad-shouldered sculpts.
I've been on the lookout for a 1/3 body that has natural proportions and more posing range but I haven't had any luck. The best I've found is just more or less the same standard 1/3 body that most company use but with a 3-part torso, but there's always a tradeoff like worse elbows or knees you don't have on a stiffer doll.
Then the company that makes the prettiest sculpts I've seen decided to design the joints so that the slit is invisible for the sake of beauty, but that means the doll can bend elbows and knees sub 90 degrees which is awful.
Doesn't help that just like with action figures most collectors are poselets who'll spend a gazillion dollars but have their dolls in horrible lifeless poses 'cause posing takes minimal thought and skill
I think the resin side of the hobby is more oriented toward display dolls. They don't care about articulation that much and if the dolls pose better than action figures it's mostly due to the scale and the fact that being strung inherently gives them a bit more wiggle room, I think.

It's probably the discrepancy between USD and JPY right now. Back in the day there was almost parity between JPY and USD if you just add a decimal before the last two figures ($1.00 = Y100), but the yen has devalued significantly since then. These websites are maintained by people who learned webdev in the era of Ask Jeeves and the thought of adjusting prices probably hasn't even crossed their minds as a smart thing to do because they're busy thinking about joint engineering and resin curing. It is what it is, and it's why importing shit from Japan is almost always worth the shipping costs at this time. I don't think it's duplicitious so much as it's just... not something they've thought about in the first place. We are a periphery market at the end of the day.

>Most people in the US are just one big medical bill away from poverty
I doubt those are the ones who can afford many expensive hobbies, right? Although many people who have those gigantic doll collections on YT look like they live in a trailer (seriously what the hell)

>> No.46605781

>>46605711
It's often the case that just because they *can* afford the hobby doesn't mean that they *should*. I've met many people who spend the majority of their paycheck on hobbies and entertainment while routinely failing to make payments of credit cards, car loans, rent, etc. It usually hasn't lasted long for them.

>> No.46605873

>>46605711
Nope, that's all of us. This'll be a bit of a blogpost, but do bear with me.

One of the leading causes of medical bankruptcy in the US is deadass a series of rabies vaccinations. You can't not get them if you are exposed, you risk not just certain death, but a particularly miserable one. You will need to get multiple injections over multiple weeks, and it can cost over $5000 USD of money you literally do not have a choice except to buy, borrow, beg, and steal if you don't have it on you. Most insurance providers have something called a deductible, a minimum threshold you have to hit before it starts covering your medical bills. Most people can only afford the cheapest of these plans (and trust me, the more expensive options are not better,) and so their deductible can be north of $10,000. While some people have the option to choose a plan, many people get their insurance through their employer, and some employers can force you to pay for their plan as part of the terms and conditions of your employment, so even if it's garbage, you are stuck with it. This is why most medical providers ask if you want to use your insurance... for some appointments, it may be cheaper to pay out of pocket.

As for the living situation, housing is a nightmare anywhere out here, and it's frequently easier and cheaper if you have the funds to buy a cheap plot of land and plonk a trailer on it. It'll fall apart, but trust me, so will your fucking house when the neighbors on the hill above you log the hillside for cattle, causing flooding downhill of them that, among other things, shifts your house off its foundation by more than 6" -- which is something insurance doesn't cover unless you buy an extra, expensive flood plan, and why would you buy that when you live on a hill and have never experienced flooding? (We don't have a legal case against them. Already tried.) So either way you wind up in a home that should be condemned, and no matter how much or how little you make, the social services are not there for you, and your income is not enough to assist you with bettering your situation: thus you turn to hobbies, because even if you didn't indulge, it wouldn't make any difference, and at least if you indulge, you have something that makes life worth living.

>>46605781
A lot of 'em literally cannot make the choice to be responsible, unfortunately, I've had family like that. Something in their brain doesn't give them the tools to make the right choice, because it isn't a choice at all for them. The impulsivity and desire to Have Thing is just the stronger impulse, and no amount of logic, reason, or common sense will change that. These are the sorts of people that whale themselves into homelessness because of genshin or csgo skins; they clearly have a condition and need help for their issues, but see point A about US healthcare.

Not to be too much of a downer, but in a country where the largest employer in 30-some states is Walmart (who holds yearly charity drives so their employees can have Thanksgiving dinner because they do not offer enough hours to facilitate those people buying these things for themselves) things are pretty precarious at the best of times. Whether you're in a high-demand trade, a minimum-wage job, self-employed, a PhD-holding scientist... overwhelmingly, financial stability is never a guarantee in the US of A.

Sadly I cannot for the life of me find the video in my NewPipe history because the title is in Chinese, but it's similar to a butterfly joint on action figures except better. You can shrug the shoulders up or down, move them forward or back. The arm range you get from this is amazing e.g. you can wrap the arm around the neck. It looks very natural. The only problem is that I find impldoll sculpts hideous. Their women look like Olympic swimmers. But if you're into that type of build then it's gotta be the best doll body ever.

The knowledge that I spend many magnitudes more on clothes than the actual doll has kept me from buying scales that can't wear most of the wardrobe at hand.

Best part about those eyes is that I got them as a freebie from Tenshi 266 when I bought Rin's eyes. The defects in them are very minor and only come out under specific lighting.

I would love to shoot on 35mm, but film is fucking expensive. I remember when Fuji Superia 400 was $, now it's like $10+. It seems like it's not worth it if you're not shooting medium or large format.
