Not sure, it's a good question, though. But consider that most people don't really know/are interested in full historical and (sub)cultural context of their own countries anyway. If you are suggesting that foreigners cannot understand the (nearly) full context of native musical scene then I would disagree. It's just that most people are not really interested or don't have the means (language) and aren't bothered to acquire it.

I've always wondered about lyrics. Mostly it doesn't matter that much but there are also many cases where the lyrics are part of the intended musical message. Mukai Shuutoku of Number Girl and Zazen Boys really creates a whole new worldview in his songs which are continuously flowing through one song to the next between his albums and even different bands. Like 冷凍都市の暮らし　アイツまた姿晦まし　六本の狂ったはがねの振動　ガキが笑う何も知らず and of course 繰り返す諸行無常　蘇る性的衝動 and many other lines are carrying meanings through his whole work. Has to be extremely strange to enjoy the song without being able to grasp it's meaning.

But even taking pop acts, YUKI for example has a song released on her first solo album that reflect on the break up of her band Judy&Mary and how should she approach her life from that point onward. It's fascinating to imagine people who listen to it as just "a song".

Pretty random, but I'm trying to find a thread in youtube comments that I remember talking about the members of the bands Tokyo Shoegazer, CQ and Honeydip and what happened with them / what they are doing now, it also mentioned something about a birthday party private concert for one of the members or something
It was mostly 2 accounts talking with each other about it, one of them was probably the uploader of the video
I think it was either under a Honeydip or CQ upload, but I can't seem to find it

Okay so I finally got to listening MIDORI's "Hatsutaiken" concert.

What can I say? I left with the feeling that I "ちょっとだけ大人になったかもね", as the famous singer ASMI would say.

I think I should call the vocalist "Gotou-sensei" (because of the whole school uniform education themes).
That and...I felt like I learned something important from that music and from Gotou-sensei in particular.

The chaotic feeling of sensuAL FrustRation that we should all release together in synchronization.

Wow wow wow I'm still vibrating while I'm writing this with the memories of Gotou-sensei's performance.

...not gonna lie I got a few, hmmm..., "excitements" while listening but I think that precisely was the intent - to awaken the Primale within the audience.

This is really a worldview changing experience now I have a completely different view of Japanese girls, something infinitely deeper than how I used to perceive them but also with a lot more attention to the surface at the same time...damn this sounds cringy when I write it out but whatever it is better to say this than not to say this.

Yet I still have this elusive feeling that there is something that I missed out on, there is without doubt something deeper here that is mean to be deciphered.

Shelter's stage is so tiny, most restaurants have bigger ones.
And audio is very quiet.
But all 3 acts were good. I need to search for some videos of the second one and post them here, never heard that girl(鈴木実貴子ズ), but she's badass.
Mariko's red guitar sounds weird plugged into JazzChorus instead of regular Marshall(i know that she used JC back in 2005, with that much distortion it doesn't matter). Or it was those strange boutique overdrive pedals. Almost bluesey.
Lap steel guitar sounds godly with psychedelic effects.
Harada's bass was barely audible on Midori albums and it's still is.

It's actually insane how effortless she is at playing insanely hard rhythm parts.
Hisako truly is one of a kind.
And i liked how much more edge toddle had live. Their bass player seemed like he was playing thrash or something.
Other acts were cool too. Alt-idol dancing was as hilarious as it seems on videos.

I agree the shows I've seen in Japan had a better energy, but since I live in usa, it is what it is. I feel like shows were better in the west years ago before cell phones took over. Still, I'm glad these bands will even come over and do shows here. I think if I lived in Japan I'd probably go to multiple shows a month.

Don't know about energy, DJ510 show i went to was crazy(and extremely sweaty), obviously, but the more normal shows were rather calm, only a couple guys went nuts during the alt-idol sets. But i liked how varied the audience was, guys in crazy outfits, normal guys, old punks, salaryman in a suit, normal older women, cute tiny girls in masks. Lots of girls in general, actually.
Plus, i liked that they actually wait for the song to be over before cheering and clapping.
And yeah, almost nobody is on their phones.
I don't get why livehouses aren't always full though. Shinjuku LOFT is in the middle of Kabukicho, people are everywhere, but the venue was only half full. Shelter was better, but it's extremely tiny.

Yeah, but bands like MOTFD can't. And there's a lot of smaller bands touring outside of Japan. Even SEAPOOL did shows overseas, which is interesting, there's no way they made money from it.

When i go to a show, I may take one or two pics for the memory, and then back in my pocket it goes. People recording shows in full like it's gonna be a more enjoyable experience, they are bonkers.
