遊ぶ is intransitive, therefore ゲームを遊ぶ is grammatically incorrect. you can say ゲームをして遊ぶ however. or just ゲームをする|やる. sometimes で is also an option, e.g. ボールで遊ぶ.

the verb itself has many other uses (it can even mean to be without a job and just hang around) and even the "playing" is often not to be taken literary. when adults use it refering to their own activities it means to have fun, do sth. for fun or amusement.

kind of but not really, i just turned 30 a couple of months ago but before about age 26 i had no ability to stick to anything long term because before my brain was fully developed i had next to no executive functioning skills. even if i tried to learn earlier i would have made basically 0 progress and given up in under a year like everything else i tried to do until more recently. honestly i still kind of struggle because i have autism and my executive functioning is still way below a neurotypical, but the fact i've actually managed to keep up a semi-consistent schedule for over 6 months is pretty mindblowing to me because i was literally unable to do anything like this even just a few years ago. i've only recently realised i actually have the ability to develop hobbies and skills now unlike when i was younger

I started studying Japanese 15 years ago. The oldest card in my Anki deck is from 2009. Ever since then I've been studying in bursts. 2-4 weeks of studying, 3-12 months of burnout. There are cards that I forgot and relearned over a dozen times. I have a total of 11000 cars in my deck now, 3000 of that I pretty much forgot.

I actually started it all with Heisig's Remembering the Kanji in 2009. Grinded all 2000 cards in one summer, which lead to my first burnout. Most of that effort went to waste. I attempted to refresh the knowledge and restart my RTK deck 2-3 times, but the keywords are so arbitrary that I'd have to relearn it all and it's probably a waste of time at this point.
I picked up grammar with Let's Learn Japanese Basic Now with Althaus-sensei for beginner stuff, later read Tae Kim and a few years ago I went through all 3 volumes of Dictionary of Basic/Intermediate/Advanced Japanese Grammar.

The only thing I actually use Japanese for is reading VNs, that's my only source of practice. I do that in burst too, I read a VN then I get tired of it and play video games for half a year in my free time. I can't speak for shit and my listening is pretty bad too.
Anyway, my current skill level is that I can read school slice of life moege at a decent speed, anything like a scifi or fantasy storyge, I use a text hooker for because all the dictionary lookups would slow me down. With that my reading speed is good enough that it actually feels like having fun, instead of grinding and studying. I can usually keep up with the VN speech while reading the text.

Anyway, it would be nice to actually get good. It feels a bit bad that after all this time I'm still entirely relying on a text hooker for any game with even the slightest specialized vocab. You guys got any tips? My main problem is that my knowledge is absolutely all over the place and full of holes, sometimes I forget basic words, but I know far too much to make it worthwhile to start relearning things from zero (yet again) with another method. Should I just force myself to keep doing Anki every day? I heard some people just lose that too and pick up vocab "naturally" but that never worked for me, I just keep forgetting words.

The other day while looking for monolingual transition resources, I stumbled upon this fantastic general guide: https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/
Reading through this guide, I found myself impressed at just how well it reflected the problems that I faced while learning, and how thorough it was. It directly confronts the issues of both those looking to learn Japanese by consuming media and those looking to gain as close to native accent as possible.
I am not an expert. I can only speak to my own experiences learning. I can tell you that using near identical methods described in the guide, I was allowed to skip semesters ahead in my college Japanese classes (from an introductory class to an intermediate one) and reached a point where I can comfortably read and enjoy light novels, anime and manga.
I highly recommend this guide to anyone starting out, or even those who are a little more advanced.

Not copy paste, I just wrote that out.
Yeah I guess I should just stop with the half years breaks.
Anyway I forgot to write that the reason I brought up Remembering the Kanji was because I keep mixing up similar words. Like 堕落 and 墜落, 部屋 and 部室, 都会 and 都合 ... you get the idea. Even basic shit. And it feels like Anki isn't helping with not mixing them up. One of the words come up, I mess it up, when I see it again of course I know which one it is so I hit good. Then a few weeks later the other pair comes up and I mess it up again.
Any tips for dealing with similar kanji?

Read linnies with yomichan?
Reducing friction by cutting text-hooker or whatever else you need
Save unfamiliar words to anki, mix up genres sometimes and given where you're now you should be basically fluent in a short while, though it would be better if your studying burst lasted at least a few months.

that was me about 4 years ago when i decided to actually learn japanese (for real this time). i was around n4-n3 at the time and could stumble my way through stuff by looking up everything. now im post n1 by a good margin and can understand pretty much anything.

1: i made myself a routine which i absolutely cannot deviate from: do my anki reps every day, 10 new cards, no more no less. add as many or as few cards as i want, so long i get my 10 new cards in per day. thats the amount i can comfortable do without EVER missing a day.

2: always be reading something, and read every day, even if its only for 10 minutes. any visual/light/web novel will do. usually this turns into an hour of reading, but sometimes it doesnt and thats fine.

getting started was easy because i could just start reading right away, and having holes in my vocabulary wasnt a problem because i only used my own mining deck so i didnt waste time on the things i did know. i went through the shin kanzen grammar books to plug grammar holes, which wasnt super important in hindsight but helped improve things like jlpt test scores which helped with motivation for me personally. but its a serious burnout risk so dont start with this until you are fully committed.

on top of that i try to use japanese when possible. i listen to japanese vtubers and play jprgs in japanese etc. i cant be bothered typing more but your spotty knowledge is actually not a problem but a huge advantage already over someone starting fresh so just shove a lot of japanese through your skull and you will improve. it might not seem like you are picking up words but you are, its just that the vocab grind takes at least a decade to "complete" so you wont notice improvement on the time scale of days or even weeks. anki feels like its worth the few minutes it takes per day though and its a nice constant reminder that im learning japanese.

you are right that this is a weakness of anki. it cant help you identify WHY you are getting words wrong. if it bothers you so much you can write down the words whenever that happens and review them outside of anki, paying attention to the difference and learning which one is which and how to recognize them.
RTK is a waste of time though and wont even help you with this. you dont need RTK to tell you that 存 has 子 in it and 在 has 土, and come up with some mnemonic or way to memorize how 存分 is read.

>the previous step was pure studying and shitty textbooks or grinding common words from lists

i'm definitely back to that after dropping my studies but oh well. guess i'll start grinding again and try to keep focused this time.

it's just unnecessarily frustrating. slow pace is more like spending minutes on a single sentence, looking at the entire page, and remembering how much you still have to brute force through. it is a great improvement however as you said and this is my second reminder to keep going, because you will eventually come back to it years later and it will not be kind on you.

Some people in the thread will probably disagree, but if you know absolutely nothing, a textbook that schools use is great to learn basic grammar, vocab and get some practice. Something like Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese. You can torrent it with all the support materials.
This video course is also great for beginners. You'll have to find the textbook pdfs somewhere.

This is precisely what I was looking for, Does anyone has this kind of content? Just simple Japanese things?

For instance, I listened to "Atama, kata, risa, ashi"
And I learned the body parts pretty quickly. Unfortunately the kanji wasn't shown.

I think humanity has a lot to learn on teaching languages in general.

gotta start with simpler things and build a base, so that you can interpret most of it on your own. trannylaters loolcalizers don't care about rendering accurate to text translations. not to say that steins gate suffers from this, but even half decent translators are going to take liberties because to them it ultimately doesn't matter so long as what is important is properly conveyed. that's why we're here trying to learn nip; to avoid that.

which means just that, you need to make it comprehensible
which is a bit of effort at the start and far less of an effort later
but you need to put in the effort to make it comprehensible otherwise you won't learn, at the beginning to build your initial vocab japanese subtitled anime is great because you hear the sentences and can quickly look things up

honestly from what i've experienced just in terms of time investment japanese is harder than excelling at other hobbies, it's more difficult to put in time into other hobbies
for example programming, sure i'm not the best programmer or system admin, but i btfo everyone at my job and am in charge of the entire infrastructure for our project and external communication, which requires knowledge of linux, docker, aws, networking and several other things
and i've not put in as much time interacting with these as i have into consuming japanese content, yet putting time into the things above was more effort because it required more concentrated thinking as opposed to let's say watching anime and looking up a few words

i can speak japanese
not without an accent and probably not the most fluent speaker, but i would get there 100% if i spent a year in japan or something
but at the point where there are no communication issues, a japanese person wouldn't be frustrated talking to me
in fact i had a brief moment where i did wanted practice to speak a little and hired an italki teacher for a 30 minutes (or was it an hour?) and we pretty much just had a casual conversation and he remarked in the middle of it that he completely forgot he was talking to a learner, we were just having a chat and it was fine

and that's the result of a lot of comprehensible input, sure you do need a bit of conversation practice to get good at it but i would say 90% of it is the language knowledge you get from input and the other 10% you do when you need it

even hmslc, he would have posted here a bit but would have probably gotten bored from all the ankle biting and low level posting and gone to do something productive
only reason there is a name to his persona is because he was on discord and interacted with an alternative community in a different way

my most notable memory for when hmslc posted on djt was when i posted a mistake in swan song and everyone swarmed me saying "haha you don't get it" without actually saying what or why, it was actually a mistake and djt users were engaging in classical group think without any basis, hmslc posted as anonymous agreeing with me and got the same treatment
