Yeah that was when I decided to completely stop reading his stories. I can't think of a single instance in mythology where eating a child makes you ascended to godhood nor do I remember a story where a tengu eats a human. They can turn violate or humiliate them but eating them isn't something I remember them doing.

Zounose has quit a few things he does well such as Youmu or Sakuya who are very close to their canon counterparts but his whole "cannibalism fetish" kinda ruins most of his works since "eating humans" seems to be the punchline to most of his works. Not all youkai are man-eaters, that's something he seems to completely overlook/ignore

Kasen's problem is that she just isn't very sincere about it. Despite saying that she wants to align her ideals with Heaven, she casually pops vengeful spirits for no real reason, she constantly eats instead of suppressing her desires, and tricked Reimu into sealing her arm because she couldn't control it. She's a shitty excuse for a hermit and she's not gonna make it.

Zounose isn't much like 40k, I think Ameyama Denshin's doujins are more like 40k.
The Tengu canabalism is probably Zounose bein inspired by human turning into Tengu stories, but cites.

I think the problem ultimately comes in that Kasen's role kinda gets supplanted by Yukari, who is just an overall more interesting character in her mentor status to Reimu. Now that Kasen basically filled her role of getting her arm back... what else is there for Kasen to really do for Reimu that other characters can't? Like he exhausted pretty much ever scenario for their relationship through the manga so now she's just... there.
It doesn't help that she just feels like a character he had to constantly rewrite to make her more interesting, like i really don't get what making her a sage of Gensokyo really did, especially seeing how she was consistently shown to not know how Gensokyo worked at all despite fucking creating it. Her being a hermit that surpasses Miko also never goes anywhere because... she barely knows what being a hermit is despite being so old.

Kasen is a very different sort of mentor than Yukari, though. Much less capable, but also much more trustworthy, and lacking the self-serving and/or manipulative undertones Yukari has. She's much more directly helpful than any other character would be.
She was pretty important in ULiL as the brains behind the operation, but was wasted in AoCF, where she was just Reimu's initial partner before being cast to the side and doing nothing of interest at all.
But AoCF had a lot of characters who felt completely superfluous and only existed as carryovers from the previous games, so that was less of a Kasen issues, and more ZUN being a bad writer.

I unironically would have enjoyed turning her either back into her evil self or at the very least, had her be a bit more manipulativfe and antagonistic towards Reimu to give their dynamic more range. Even then I think Byakuren does way less than she should, with the in story justification being that Gensokyo is already so close to her ideal world she has much less to fight for.
But I would argue that her magician scientist angle which is pretty.underdeveloped than Kasen being obvious at a lot of things despite herself.
For both I think Gensokyo isn't dynamic enough, Byakuren needs a problem where she can science/magic stuff to help against it, as well as more Buddhist lore.
And Kasen needs something to actively fight against.

Doing things such as killing your parents, genocide, causing a schism, harming a Buddha, and killing enlightened people are basically irredeemable sins and you go to worst hell.
