Sure, you get a hitbox, which makes the game a hell of a lot easier, but other than that it's a huge graphical improvement (I thought I was flying over the Red Sea in stage 3).

Painting a circle on the character does not make it any easier. It isn't even in the right location in half of the frames nor does it represent the actual hitbox. Also, being on the sprite itself makes it useless for the only use the dot has in the first place.

Pretty much. Once you learn what will and what won't kill you, the games get a shit load easier. Also learning to control your movements and when to bomb (to avoid death) make up the three core skills you need to know to get good at bullet hells.
