Anon... a simple google search will show you that these peerage ranks were created after meiji restoration, trying to emulate britbong system as close as possible. The "prince" translation comes from translators interpreting it as similar to british ducal titles. Again, tling it as "prince" is not exactly wrong if you expand the definition to include those related by blood to the imperial line, though somewhat distant.

Not really feeling 嘆きの亡霊 desu
I don't mind the joke when it's done in Flashman Papers or Ciaphas Cain where the main characters actively do something cowardly or self serving while showing some awareness of how much shit they're getting into, everyone around them blowing this out of proportion is great.

However Krai being an actual sub room temperature IQ mongoloid who nods to everything, forgets stuff five minutes after he's told and actively refuses to see that shit is hitting the fan is just not compelling at all, and it's not as funny to see people misunderstanding that.

The first volume is as close to a masterpiece as it gets with the execution of that premise.
However, later on it starts to commit the mistake of taking itself too seriously in a lore/worldbuilding way, and kinda in a wiki-filler way.
Like for a direct comparison evil lord also starts out simple then starts spewing out worldbuilding whenever needed, but it's never really more than absolutely necessary to keep the plot rolling.
Meanwhile this reaches a point where it's almost overlord levels of tangent, like early on when there's the dragon slayer cocky guys and it basically gives you a detailed breakdown of the economic and guild situation that country was in at the time and it's like, who the fuck cares.
And this, everything being so detailed and logical and everyone having higher than average intelligence as a result, just makes the MC being room temp not really work, it feels too contrived as a result.

interesting, i was also thinking about why it doesn't click for me yesterday
i feel like the basic premise of 嘆きの亡霊 is a bit like a slightly more involved konosuba, you have this sitcom-setup with ridiculous characters and them interacting with each other is what makes for the jokes and drives the plot forward, with the caveat that the plot is very "rigid" and never moves too far away from the status quo (at least at the point where i'm at now)
i actually really like this and think it does a good job at it - the characters are extremely likeable and fun and i enjoy seeing them interact and the humor of the author. i can even forgive that klain is a acting like a fucking retard i still find myself giggling at the misunderstandings
but the reason konosuba works is that it uses this setup and puts the character interactions at the forefront, it's fast-paced, there is narration of course, some world-building, some explanation of what's going on. but the character interactions are always the star of the show, from beginning to end, and that's what you need to do to make this setup work
嘆きの亡霊 just doesn't do that, the interactions are interrupted by constant wordy tidbits about the world that have no real relevance to what's actually going on right now
just take volume 2 it was so fucking long like holy shit you could have cut at least half of that and would have ended up with a way better paced volume that doesn't feel like a slog to read
it really is a shame because the characters are fantastic but yeah i don't see myself persevering through this one

interesting, I never personally thought the worldbuilding got out of hand or even had it cross my mind at all that the text is spending too much time on these details. To me the main character literally not listening at all to what other people say and plainly forgetting things he was told 1 page ago just doesn't make for good comedy at all.

>> No.46526640

>>46526583
It's certainly a byproduct issue.
The parts alone like character driven plot/comedy and worldbuilding isn't really an issue, and in fact it doesn't do anything better series haven't done before.
The issue is the sum of the parts, in this particular combination and context, does detract from the comedy.
If you're in for the funny, the worldbuilding gets to anywhere from intrusive to a slog depending on your tastes.
If you are in for the story and just like some funny, the MC acting like a dumbass clown yet somehow still being a particular spice of "arrogant but self deprecating" ass will get on your nerves very quickly.
Depending on what your tastes are, you may suffer both reactions.
This is very likely down to taste, if you like it then the total sum of the parts is more than what they are and if you like the worldbuilding then it's fairly well written with pacing that while a slow burn, it's not that bad.
If you don't like the result, it's just an annoying slog.

>> No.46526761

>>46526640
I wouldn't necessarily say I wasn't in it for the funny. I think it might be closer to what the other anon said, the world is sufficiently realized that all the other characters in spite of being some flavor of screwball do actually have to have the necessary brainpower to navigate said world and only makes the MC having zero agency stand out even more, unlike Konosuba which runs on looney tunes logic and so everybody is as much of a joke as each other.

It has a time and a place and they can't exist without having something to make them useful. Like being decently smart, very cunning, deceptive or God's luck or in transmigration stories they have knowledge of the game/book they are in to offset being a low-level, no-talent shitter.
The only place I can see a weak protagonist really can work in a non-weak to a strong story is in torture porn where it is just the MC suffering over and over until finally getting a win. Or misunderstanding stories where by the grace of god the MC hasn't been killed by a random bandit yet.
Both of these don't have the MC driving the story and is just being dragged by it.

My favourite kind of story is where the mc wants nothing to do with the retarded world around them yet is dragged into it while doing everything in their non-existing power to survive and escape the unlucky situation.

a. anon
b. anon-kun
c. anon-sama
desu

d. ymous
e. ymous-kun
f. ymous-sama
desu
now for all intents and purposes we have 6 people each with a unique way of addressing you desu. now what happens during translation desu?
a. you
b. you
c. you
d. you
e. you
f. you

it all gets stripped away desu, have fun figuring out who is who desu. take it a step further and you have people that use speech ticks and end all their lines with degozaru or desu and so on, guess what happens to all of that desu?

At that moment I had no fucking clue what that even meant, then like 2 years later when I could already read most stuff without checking a dictionary every 30 seconds I gave it a reread, then I remembered that joke when kaori joined the group calling him nagumo, and I was like, holy shit, that's what the joke was talking about, every single girl calls him something different even if it's just the honorific.

>I've never read a LN
But you've watched anime before, right? Then might want to start with something you're familiar like prolly Index, Spice and Wolf, Toradora, and Dendro. If not, if you've only ever read western "Ackshual Literature," TRPG and Saihate no Paladin should fit your palate since they're written like an oldskool western fantasy novel.
Boogiepop is a good mystery and can be considered one of the best during it's initial publication. But there's a bunch of more interesting mystery LNs to read now like Yurisekai Picnic, Utsuru Hako, In/Spectre, and Monogatari. Haven't read Vampire Hunter though, so I can't give my opinion.

Yes but most of the animes I watched are more psychological like Lain, Texhnolyze, Perfect Blue, Kaiba, etc and searching for similar anime is how I got interested in Boogiepop in the first place.
I got Vampire Hunter D in my radar because of Amano's artwork but then after doing more research I got interested because it seems like it has less focus on plot and more on the atmosphere, and that seems interesting.
I'll look into your recs, thanks.
I'm now also remembering Kino's Journey, which I was somewhat interested.

Is it just me or we are getting way less English translated volumes now?
Forget new stuff, even ongoing stuff seems to be on translation hiatus.
Smartphone? Kagejitsu? Overlord? Rezero? Seemingly everything no matter how popular it is reached translation hiatus for effectively no reason.
I think the only stuff that still gets releases is JNC shit but even they slowed down, Dendro 21 alone took so long it's going to get released at the end of this month like half a year after the original volume.

>> No.46573322

>>46573285
that's just an artifact of everything being caught up. stuff gets licensed volume by volume, stuff gets licensed in batches, and you can't license a volume until after it has already been published in japan. then in the us the book distribution model means that stuff has to get listed with distributors like a year in advance for physical releases, it's not physically possible to get them out sooner than that. so what you end up with is book gets published > wait until the next batch of contracts is signed > wait until materials get delivered so they can start work > wait until physical distributors actually order books at the next ordering batch > wait until books end up in stores = shit takes a year to actually end up in english
the reason jnc is less slow is because they skip the physical distribution step but they're still bound by the contract signing step

>> No.46573351

>>46573322
>and you can't license a volume until after it has already been published in japan
Should mention the only exception being blade and bastard because Drecom and JNC wanted to experiment with simultaneous worldwide release, and they ended up just giving up and releasing volume 3 normally probably because it was too logistically difficult and didn't really improve sales or anything.

Kagejitsu is stuck on volume 4 despite 5 being released December 28, 2022.
Overlord is on 15 when 16 was released on July 29, 2022.
And so on.
>then in the us the book distribution model means that stuff has to get listed with distributors like a year in advance for physical releases
>the reason jnc is less slow is because they skip the physical distribution step but they're still bound by the contract signing step

that's true, yen also only just released virgin road 7 2 years after JP release (so 1 year later than "normal"). no idea what's going on internally, my post only applies to them historically taking about 1 year between JP and EN release and I don't read overlord or kagejitsu so didn't realize those were so late. maybe they're lacking staff, maybe the contract signing stage is also taking too long, it's hard to say without actually being an insider.

kagejitsu is a funny example because i could get from "know jack shit about japanese" to "can reasonably read and only have to look at a dictionary for one kanji every 2-3 pages" in the time between vol 4 releasing and goypress actually translating it because it was over a literal year
now the gap between vol 5 jp and vol 5 en is not just even bigger than that, the gap between vol 6 jp and vol 6 en may actually reach the 2 year mark at this rate

>> No.46573440

Doesn't apply to Kagejitsu or Overlord, but apparently Shogakukan's international licensing department has literally one overworked OL handling everything for all series and all languages which makes doing anything with them take 12,000 years.

The way physical book distribution is set up in the US means there is always a hard 6-12 months between listing your book as available and it actually turning up in the shops, no exceptions. I think JNC has been quicker than 6 months in the past when the timing lines up just right for them to begin work soon after the Japanese release, and Seven Seas also does early digital releases to sidestep the physical distribution delay. Yen Press has been randomly changing release dates of books over and over for years, they might just be having logistical issues.

>> No.46573509

>>46573285
Regarding Overlord and Rezero, with the former, it's thanks to Kugane taking entire years in-between novels and, per the afterword of 16, this time taking an especially larger break as to release 17 & 18 [ final volumes ], with just a few months in-between their publication [ not literal years ] . Apparently, they'll be fairly sizeable too: think around 600-700 pages.
You then have this year long delays compounded by Yen Press finally getting to them once THEY finally become available; a process taking roughly 6 months--it becomes obvious why the impression of a 'hiatus' becomes a thing.

For ReZero, it's actually not that bad. In fact if anything, as far as EOPs ought to be concerned, both the involvement of WTC, the willing anons in those oft occurring /a/ threads, no matter how pathetic, and YP, precisely --it's surprisingly never deviated-- taking 3 months for a novel...You've got yourself a situation that's as good as it can be. They're concluding arc 6 by July, and starting 7 by around October. ReZero might be the only one thing of every single novel, excepting but a few with translators proclaimed interested in them, that has speedy & consistent releases. You even have all side-stories translated, with IF stories apparently soon to follow eventually. Very rare for licensors to go that far.

Kagejitsu will continue being shot dead forever, sorry if you're interested in it. One release this summer, the other all the way next summer, if trends are anything to go on. Only hope with this one is to 'jop it.

Anyway, part of your potential concern is in the loss of distributors for licensed LNs. I mean it when I say that, if what you're interested in doesn't have an anime, there's a chance you will literally never see it available on you know where. Things are now staying behind pay walls, and favorability to break beyond that grip is something mostly spearheaded by manga-readers.
Being an EOP LN reader is just a sad miserable thing, all the more so since the prevalence of jp epubs everywhere is quickly rising.

It's clear that while non-original anime are useless for everything but openings and endings, their purpose in promotion is effectual, with them bringing reminders and attention to rippers and licensor alike. Kagejitsu would've seen v5 translation in 2030 if it weren't for the 2nd season being a thing.

Lastly, another problem is in popularity of LNs just dropping, never turning a profit. Functional and total illiteracy alike are on the rise, most retarded people will always complain
>WORDS WORDS WORDS
--And newfaggots can't navigate themselves to anything worthwhile: quite the conundrum in an already niche interest.

All in all, to largely answer your question straight and to getting to point, it's because most licensors these days are focusing on Thai/Korean/Chinese BL novels, retarded manga that are infinitely worse than their novel counterparts, and series of the worst sort because somehow, that's what people like.
That's why the translated literature section is now just worthless garbage most of the time. 0 releases for anything good. It's just the new normal and the drought will be something to regularly deal with. Fuck the VN people for saying they're suffering. Those guys are thriving, troubled only, occasionally and temporarily, by steam and its stupid moderating team.

Well, anyway, we're beggars. Can't choose for much but take what we're given at the end of the day, even if the food comes 730 days after we're dead.
I thank you all leakers and rippers, companies and merchants alike. Just wish you wouldn't release shit so speedily and get the good stuff instead, man.

It ain't bad, I know. As with Rezero, 3 volumes per month means with 26, it would've taken 78 months total, which is 6 years and a half. Actually, it's commendable, therefore, that they got everything done 1.5 years in advance, but the takeaway is that you could really have utilized that time learning and probably read the novels in JP much faster.

..... But, you're right. 26 volumes, 5 years...that's the equivalent to 5 volumes a year. Pretty impressive.

Honestly the current situation of literature in general in the west is just so weird.
In one hand you have hordes of people ready to spam "This is slop, read a REAL book instead" every time you so much speak positively of anything japanese, and mind you this is not only about LNs, but everything from anime to vidya too.
Yet at the same time western literature publishers are somehow in even more dire straits than LN localizers are, to the point of having to pull moves like literal tiktok viral marketing to get people to read books, and even then there's a massive secondhand book market full of near mint books because people just don't read.
Even libraries are drowning in donated books that nobody actually borrows.
>As always, learning Japanese is the remedy.
>all the more so since the prevalence of jp epubs everywhere is quickly rising.
Yeah pretty much.
More than ever before there's gorillion tools and tutorials to get the basics of grammar, start grinding vocab and get the ball rolling.
And unlike the dark ages of having to cope with proxy people to buy stuff from japan these days you can straight up buy 80% of the LNs you want on amazon and coping with the other 20% with bookwalker and calling it a day.

No worse feeling than realising that the vol you were reading is the last published one, which paused in the middle of story with no wn to continue off and the author just went onto write some other series without even formally announcing a cancellation.
I am still seething about すうすく. Vol 5 was a fucking ride and the author's foreward talked about new development with the next gen chars I was fond of. And then that's it, the author didn't even mention the series in the 4 years since the last vol's published, like he erased it out of his memory.

they never talk about cancellation because otherwise some people might not buy already printed books, shit sucks but it is what it is.

Actual true cancellation is extremely rare, it only really happens on the weirdly cutthroat romcom market or when the author fucking dies.
True axings are rare and only happen due to extreme backlash plus extremely low sales or because the author caused a massive political shitstorm on twitter and is using that as an excuse to quit (get fired).
It's rare but not unsurprising to see someone suddenly come back to a half a decade old series, or for someone to take a 1+ year hiatus and suddenly come back like nothing happened.
IIRC just recently magical explorer got back from "basically dead" hiatus to regular volume releases for example.

There are tons of lns Dengeki canned that are not romcoms, if it doesn't sell it's dead.

true canned or did the author just fuck off? because the latter happens on all publishers all the time

They canned, some authors even worked on new series in Dengeki, not talking about old lns at all.

Anyone with better jp than me. I'm not good with euphemisms. 華 here means 白い粉末, as in white stain (cum stain) right? It's a morning after scene but without actual sex, so I'm trying to imagine what actually transpired.

actually lol'd at the idea of some dude not fucking a girl he sleeps with but rather just cumming all of over her while she's asleep

>but rather just cumming all of over her while she's asleep
Well it doesn't go like that. The LN is implying they had full on foreplay without the actual act, and the heroine's internal monologue in the morning after scene notes MC has a satisfied sleeping face as opposed to a full on horny but holding back face he had the night before. Since she was undressed at some point, I thought she at least gave him a handjob or something.
