>Should I just learn the word/kanji + "translation" only?
yes, and don't think as translation but as meaning, but these decks are supposed to focus on vocabulary
30 whole new words a day is quite much yes, and maybe you should try studying raw kanji/radicals first as they help with identifying them a lot easier

while on the topic, what deck?
and in general I really think coredecks are a bit of a newbie trap, and much like I've said before they can be pretty misleading
also, beware that anki is a tool for remembering, not for learning

>> No.46485204

>>46485155
nta but beginner decks should only have english sentences except in cases when more japanese is needed as a hint on the front of the cart. otherwise it's useless for beginners and only makes them spend unnecessary time in anki when they could be reading native material instead

>>46485155
Not sure about the Kaishi sentences, since the guys over at Moe made a lot of changes, but the all of the core deck sentences are solid (some are even famous quotes). But as for looking at them, I think it's kind of a chicken or egg scenario. If you look at them now and understand them, you'll be better prepared for the grammar that you start reading, but if you start reading, then you'll look at these sentences and think they're a piece of cake.
Ultimately, I'd say to just skip them.

this is outdated as fsrs ignores the ease factor and has no ease hell. also this is a separate issue from learning steps. dozens of different guides recommended different learning steps because they all just go by the author's feel. fsrs solves the question: 1) learning steps of >1 day are eliminated because they fuck with the algorithm, and 2) multiple learning steps of <1 day are eliminated because they are proven to make a negligible difference in retention

So now I see you're trying to negate my argument when talking about something completely different, which didn't even know about
but pro tip, I'm read up on that new thing later, but imo, it just over complicate things when you just need to know how anki works, or maybe it simplifies things a bit,

obviously that's enough since its literally the standard goal for Anki

Maybe, but information is just information at the end of the day. So long as you understand the general idea of a word or phrase, that should be good enough to allow you to recognize it in your reading and day-to-day life

After months of using Anki everyday, I've seen drastic improvement in my hearing and reading.
I feel that I'm getting better everyday.
But I'm seeing minimal improvments in speaking.
Not saying it doesn't help, but recognizing a word that gets inputted is completely different from thinking up a word you want to convey.
What's the best way to do improve speaking?
I've tried holding a conversations with Japanese people that want to learn English, but there is a clear conflict of interest where they want to hold a conversation completely in English as they want to practice both hearing and speaking while I want to practice speaking in Japanese.
Japanese people who want to talk in Japanese obviously don't want to talk to people with limited speaking capabilities like me.
Timezone difference also has been a significant limitng factor in finding Japanese people who want to talk.

I used to struggle similarly, but what made the difference is removing as much friction as possible when looking things up. Do you have your reading set-up figured out? Yomichan or alternative for lookups?
You might also benefit from diversifying your reading practice, say
1. something like this: w3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/
2. Translating words from Japanese songs you already like
3.Watching your favorite anime with Japanese subtitles, or trying to read a the novel it's based on, or setting up character recognition like Cloe and read the manga.
