I've known a few lesbians and it depends. It's a spectrum, you've got the "ew hetero" on one end (the most vocal, also the most likely to have a porn addiction for some reason) and on the extreme end you've got lesbians who write m/m gay porn to self insert as the guy bottoming but are only interested in women IRL (I still don't understand why), with a pretty vague ground in the middle of people who are varying levels of tolerant towards men in porn.
That being said, shipping is also a pretty stereotypical woman act, a good chunk of them would object to them being straight only because they have favourite ships. In PCB extra and phantasm there's the bit in the stage titlecard about "A mysterious occurrence on the crossing to three countries" which is a reference to Tamamo no Mae and by extension Daji. She was an evil little shit and slept around with the rich and powerful causing their downfalls until being found out herself; then got sealed in the stone that broke two years ago. Whether Ran is or isn't Tamamo/Daji is debatable as there isn't anything supporting that other than this one bit, and her reasoning for leaving the Animal Realm makes it more unlikely. ZUN probably forgot by now either way.

There's a couple ways you can go about it.
1) She's a Shikigami and only acts as Yukari programmed, which doesn't include crude underhanded tactics like sleeping around with people to gain power because they already have what amounts to admin privileges.
2) She's a Shikigami with free will, she doesn't need to sleep around because being Yukari's Shiki already gives her more power and influence than she could possibly desire: so long as she acts within Yukari's interests and commands which she is prone to forgetting/ignoring (leading to parasol discipline).

3) She would do these things regardless, but there's not really any influential powerful people to gain anything from that they couldn't just pressure otherwise; they already have power as mentioned prior. If she just wanted sex there's a number of village boys she could choose from.

I think more male characters can work, just not as main characters like Rinnosuke is with CoLA even then he's getting sidelined by Sumireko. The two Geidonte regulars are cool and touching on regular villagers are a good look into the often glossed over parts of Touhou. Adding a more martial male character that steps out of the mold wouldn't be too bad so long as his character arc begins and gets wrapped up within a few chapters likely coinciding with a larger plot.
Really it's what Lotus Eaters should have been, more characters and insight into the unspoken parts of Gensokyo instead of the same Suika/Aya/Mamizou scenes forcing their way in and hogging the spotlight.

I think it's more of a reaction against the whole shipping thing that's grown a bit too far in both east and west with lots of baggage getting increasingly associated with anything related to girls love. Though in terms of doujins, Touhou is a bit unique in that it has a huge cast with no real prominent male characters, like compare to kancolle and the like and there's always some main male character to pair with. So naturally you're going to get girl pairings. In terms of source material there's no insinuation by ZUN that they're anymore than friends, unless you're a retard that takes cute girls doing cute things as 'they're totally gay bro!!!'.
