I don't understand this perspective. For another example I thought of that correctly applies in this situation, Frederica from 86 uses 妾 and also sorts of stuff like that. I don't know what the TLs currently do, but if they swap in some old english pronouns here and there to match I don't see the issue. If it's parody chuuni just ignore it because it's gibberish and there's always that one character that will translate it for you anyway.
If it's waga-speak then there's a 95% chance it's edo japanese (high chance of bakumatsu in particular) or sengoku japanese (take a guess why), and this includes the mentioned kage jitsu.
If it's terminology chuuni with high autism concentration you're kinda screwed because it's fully author-dependent, sometimes it's easy sometimes get ready to jump in for a wild ride, especially if it's one of those that love dense archaic kanji compounds so don't get surprised about having to decipher 6+ kanji compound behemoths when it happens.

>"translation is literally (not even figuratively) impossible"
My choice of words might've been a bit too extreme which led to a bit of a derailment. My idea of "literally untranslatable" meant that there's just no one to one equivalent way oft translating something far eastern oriental (ie yukata kitsune baba and her accent)
I'd be more accurate to say that I don't think there's a way to get the whole idea behind kansai-ben and convey it accurately with a simple translation, the context of where kansai came from and the mannerism that you might expect to come with it. This discussion is probably similar to how translating itadakimasu can be awkward without having a TL note explaining that it's a sort of prayer you say before eating as without it you'd just assume that the japs for some reason exclaim "I'll be taking this now" like they're samurais about to claim the life of their foes before landing a finishing blow or something.
Yeah, I probably should stop using the word literally so nilly willy. Words have meanings and not paying attention to that erodes a language. You really don't realize how bad things are until you fail to communicate with someone even while using the same language

You know, I think my trauma might be clouding my judgment here. Someone brought this to attention on /a/ and it scarred me to the point where I assumed that everyone translates kansai-ben as cowboy speech, the impact left an impression that I haven't shaken off even until today.

honestly I would submit that dubs should never be used in a legitimate discussion about translation, for the exact reason that dubs have a different audience and any accuracy to the source explicitly takes a backseat in the dubbing process in favour of "naturalisation" for lack of a better word. which is why adr directors and scriptwriters don't have to know any japanese at all.

MC stealth observes an adventurer party because he wants to check out what adventurers are like. He's careful to not be seen because he's a merc and mercs don't like their trade secrets being shown because they're all latent enemies to each other. He saves the party by alerting them to an invisible shark, and gets out of there before being noticed. Later, that party is searching for their savior, but MC avoids them because he doesn't want to be antagonized. At this point I'm thinking MC is kind of a dumbass even though he's some super merc, but hey some habits die hard I guess. Later, a member of the party tracks him down and sits down for a talk. MC then slips her some laxatives totally unprovoked and basically laughs at her while she has to go to the bathroom (Making it clear to her that he did it). Seriously makes no sense at all considering his goal in the first place was to not make enemies.

This time's henderson scale is not exactly a bad end imo, but definitely a "this is not it" end. But the foreshadowing about the child with margitt got me interested. Evenmore considering the fact that it's not the arachne daughter, isolte, from the other ifs but a mensch.

The elf slave bride LN is about an autistic archmage who falls in love with an autistic elf girl in the very first volume and they both spend the series fighting their autism to get closer.
That makes it sound like a comedy, but although it's not, the stakes are still somewhat low because both of them are kinda OP. You don't even have the common "you'll die centuries before me" drama that plagues human-elf romance because powerful mages can use magic to prolong their lives.
It's still good fantasy romance, though.

I don't think we are really on the same page when it comes to definitions.
For example Kaguya at the start, comedy aside, is just drama, and I imagine what you describe as duking it out emotionally falls within this definition.
By telenovela slop I actually mean going full stupid, like "misunderstandings would seem reasonable plot devices in comparison" levels of stupid.
For example Yuusha Shoukan ni Makikomareta Kedo is something I have seen called telenovela slop, but it's actually somewhat reasonable for me, if barely borderline, especially once the Kuro drama starts.

>> No.46450060

>>46450037
Well, I don't know if your definition of telenovela requires "dumb misunderstandings" then yeah we're not on the same page at all. I took it to mean any work where the main focus is on character/romance drama, relationships, etc. and usually done in a very dramatized fashion. I actually haven't read any LNs I would describe in this way, but I can think of plenty of VNs that would fit. For an easy example, Kiminozo is like the ultimate 2000s romance drama if you've ever read it. It has ton of padding and shitty routes, but the core drama of it is fantastic in my opinion.

Like basically as long as it's not going full Kanokari it's probably not telenovela slop, but to be fair that's a pretty hard cliff to go run off from unless the author is intentionally trying to be that stupid.
Something like COTE at first glance you would think I would call it telenovela shit, but given the characters actually have their own motivations I can't really call it that, like sure it may look stupid, especially with how the Kei plot goes WHICH I'M ALSO SALTY ABOUT, but there's a point behind all of it, so the drama is not stupid telenovela shit, it's just drama.

It's a type of television drama that was (is?) massive in Latin America. Typical plotlines are extremely over-the-top and huge on drama. But I don't have any familiarity with the genre or anything like that. I always presumed it was like American soap operas but even more hammy judging from various snippets I've seen with people screaming at each other in Spanish with dramatic music playing.

Just read what you want to read, who is anyone to stop you? But if you do want to get into more non-action stuff I would recommend COTE like most people here, as well as Otonari Tenshi and Tokidoki Bosotto Roshia-go.
Pretty far from dorama-action-fantasy that the question that started all this is asking for, but there it is.

Telenovelas do have romance and misunderstandings caused by scheming evil woman, but for me the marking characteristic of novelas is having a shit ton of characters each with their little plotlines and relations. Usually there are two or more semi-isolated settings too with only a few characters acting as bridges (like rural setting x urban setting, high society x favela dwellers, city 1 x city 2, country 1 x country 2, etc)
Honzuki is the closest I can think of as far as LNs go, most romance LNs are not comparable to telenovelas simply from being too focused on a single protagonist or couple, and side-characters being eternal protagonist orbiters instead of living their own lives/romances.

Manga is an industry constantly on it's deathbed.
>Grueling schedules makes the industry go through mangaka like coomers go through tissues.
>Unlike anime, they lack the soundtrack, VAs, and animation that CAN make an adaptation kino.
>Unlike the source material, they have no space for monologues and narration which is 60-95% of the depth.
>Extremely inefficient release-story ratio means worst case scenario a manga can take a year to adapt a single LN volume once accounting for hiatus months.
>Using inexperienced mangaka means the adaptation will be shit anyway.
>Even if the manga art is good, it will still move at a glacial pace.
I stopped caring about manga adaptations years ago, at least with anime adaptations it's a coin toss to see if it's shit or a masterpiece and even if it's shit there's still kino OSTs and VA scenes that come out of it.

>> No.46479929

i still repeat the same shit i always do when this topic comes up
publishers should do more merch, even if it's just keychains or something, no point in waiting until the anime adaptation to start doing that if a series is already popular enough
and hell sometimes even when it's popular with an anime like kagejitsu there's still not much merch

>> No.46480054

only mildy related but i wish publishers would make more merch that's actually fashionable
like i bought a really neat yurucamp shirt in japan that just looks like a cool shit anyone could wear
whereas most of "otaku merch" is extremely ugly clothing with anime faces printed all over it

>> No.46480437

>>46479986
Isn't there a statistic that shows most merch (really high like 80%) are bought by women?

So if a series doesn't have any appeal to women with lots of handsome guys, merch doesn't really sell. So it makes sense to me kagejitsu wouldn't get much merch since males don't really buy them.

>> No.46480605

>>46480437
Wouldn't doubt it. Went to Japan recently and anywhere that sold merch would pretty much always have big sections/an entire floor specifically for women's goods. Keychains, stands, folders, pens, stickers, cases, etc. of bishounen from dozens of mobile games I've never even heard of. Can't even really say it balances out by price either because they're willing to drop 30k+ on figures too

Though yeah, the protagonist being an actual socio(and psycho-)path aside, I do like how the series goes off the rails right from the get go. Just imagine the possibilities if it manages to get a crossover with Kagejitsu. Both MC would instantly be best friends, nemeses, and rivals with each other on their first meeting.

>publishers should do more merch
Nah, for Kadokawa maybe, but most publishers struggle to even stay afloat, and that's despite them having a flagship series or two. Most of the time, it'll backfire like Dendro (whom as we all know managed to get EXTREME support from HJ from the start via Taiki, Imai Kami, Crow Record, [ ] Adaptation, etc.). AFAIK desu, only Danmachi has the same amount of excessive support given by its (non-Kadokawa) publisher, and that's despite GA Bunko being in charge of most current KonoRano rankers.
Honestly, the only saving grace in the LN industry is that *lphapolis' business model is hated by all. If you think having no merch is bizarre, wait until you hear how a company outjewed the Jews by letting other parties (gov't, etc) fund their entire anime adaptation while they sit back and enjoy all the benefits without any of the hard work.

I'm the only one who thinks Hajime's robotic arm manga design is BEST than the novel anime

unironically that's because spinoffs are a retarded concept
just make it part of the main plot as a cooldown volume like a lot of people already do
even dendro itself did it with i think vol 11 with the gloria fight flashback and then again with the meme battle royale, literally no fucking point in a full spinoff that people are not going to buy

you could say the same about manga adaptations
just like spinoffs they die after a volume or two however

They probably just have no confidence in the contents of the spinoff and would rather it flop outside the context of the story than kill any bit of momentum and dampen hype

plenty of spinoffs have done fine. haruhi nagato spinoff, index railgun spinoff, danmachi spinoffs, konosuba megumeme spinoff, re;zero ex, sao progressive and alternative spinoffs, so on and so forth. if it ends after a couple of volumes then it's no big loss, if it picks up then it's a huge gain.

>even within those, most examples are literal whos nobody remembers compared to the main series
also sao progressive is a remake pretty sure, not a spinoff

>LN to LN?
Raildex (in popularity), >You wouldn't date a clock (in runtime), Danmachi (same popularity, sales, and rank)
>LN to others?
Best. Girl. Utaha., Log Horizon's TRPG, Beatless.
>Others to LN?
Practically all of Ryo Mizuno's (Lodoss, Rune Soldier) works, even though his game's system is actually quite well thought.

Yeah, that's the one. The WN continues after where the LNs got axed and the best part actually comes right after that
