Heavily depends on the writer, but in most cases it kinda is actually legit.
Though if they are aiming for broader appeal they will use ancient vocab but slightly more modern keigo to not make it completely incomprehensible.

My choice of words might've been a bit too extreme which led to a bit of a derailment. My idea of "literally untranslatable" meant that there's just no one to one equivalent way oft translating something far eastern oriental (ie yukata kitsune baba and her accent)
I'd be more accurate to say that I don't think there's a way to get the whole idea behind kansai-ben and convey it accurately with a simple translation, the context of where kansai came from and the mannerism that you might expect to come with it. This discussion is probably similar to how translating itadakimasu can be awkward without having a TL note explaining that it's a sort of prayer you say before eating as without it you'd just assume that the japs for some reason exclaim "I'll be taking this now" like they're samurais about to claim the life of their foes before landing a finishing blow or something.

Completed 決戦世界のダンジョンマスター after trpg author recommended it as his 2023's pick. Was entertaining but lacks the kind of structured plot I like with an overarching theme, despite the setting being a grand defense against galactic disasters by using dungeons as killboxes on a dimensional choke point world. Still good enough to make me binge read and feel like shit after completing it so give it a chance if you find it interesting.

I took it to mean any work where the main focus is on character/romance drama, relationships, etc. and usually done in a very dramatized fashion. I actually haven't read any LNs I would describe in this way, but I can think of plenty of VNs that would fit. For an easy example, Kiminozo is like the ultimate 2000s romance drama if you've ever read it. It has ton of padding and shitty routes, but the core drama of it is fantastic in my opinion.

Telenovelas do have romance and misunderstandings caused by scheming evil woman, but for me the marking characteristic of novelas is having a shit ton of characters each with their little plotlines and relations. Usually there are two or more semi-isolated settings too with only a few characters acting as bridges (like rural setting x urban setting, high society x favela dwellers, city 1 x city 2, country 1 x country 2, etc)
Honzuki is the closest I can think of as far as LNs go, most romance LNs are not comparable to telenovelas simply from being too focused on a single protagonist or couple, and side-characters being eternal protagonist orbiters instead of living their own lives/romances.

So if a series doesn't have any appeal to women with lots of handsome guys, merch doesn't really sell. So it makes sense to me kagejitsu wouldn't get much merch since males don't really buy them.

Wouldn't doubt it. Went to Japan recently and anywhere that sold merch would pretty much always have big sections/an entire floor specifically for women's goods. Keychains, stands, folders, pens, stickers, cases, etc. of bishounen from dozens of mobile games I've never even heard of. Can't even really say it balances out by price either because they're willing to drop 30k+ on figures too

Continuing my blog, finished volume 5, that ending was awesome. Although I didn't really like the way that the author wrote the whole haro is somehow related to the ghost squad thignie. I guess there was some foreshadowing for the reader in the previous volumes but I'd still prefer that the author kept it at that level until (and if) the actual betrayal occurs. Nah, for Kadokawa maybe, but most publishers struggle to even stay afloat, and that's despite them having a flagship series or two. Most of the time, it'll backfire like Dendro (whom as we all know managed to get EXTREME support from HJ from the start via Taiki, Imai Kami, Crow Record, [ ] Adaptation, etc.). AFAIK desu, only Danmachi has the same amount of excessive support given by its (non-Kadokawa) publisher, and that's despite GA Bunko being in charge of most current KonoRano rankers.
Honestly, the only saving grace in the LN industry is that *lphapolis' business model is hated by all. If you think having no merch is bizarre, wait until you hear how a company outjewed the Jews by letting other parties (gov't, etc) fund their entire anime adaptation while they sit back and enjoy all the benefits without any of the hard work.

just make it part of the main plot as a cooldown volume like a lot of people already do
even dendro itself did it with i think vol 11 with the gloria fight flashback and then again with the meme battle royale, literally no fucking point in a full spinoff that people are not going to buy

plenty of spinoffs have done fine. haruhi nagato spinoff, index railgun spinoff, danmachi spinoffs, konosuba megumeme spinoff, re;zero ex, sao progressive and alternative spinoffs, so on and so forth. if it ends after a couple of volumes then it's no big loss, if it picks up then it's a huge gain.
